I believe that you also have to move the trans crossmember to the AW4 holes for the AX-15 and it also uses a different trans mount. Luckily the trans mount for the AX-15 is relatively cheap ~$30 compared to ~$115 for a puegot one. The pilot bearing is a 70's CJ bearing if I remember, you'll have to do a bit of searching for that.

idle problems....only sometimes
87manche replied to offroader461's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Unplug and replug the TPS and IAC connectors. If I do that every few months my high idle problems go away. I keep meaning to put some dielectric grease in there. Anyway, I second TPS, or a sticking IAC. An AT TPS will work for an MT rig, you just have an unused connection on the sensor. -
think I found my tranny and tcase?

you'll need all the parts in the bellhousing. And you'll have to use a compression fitting to mate the external slave to your clutch hose. Pete has done the external slave AX-15 and it's probably quite similar, he may chime in. -
that would be my meaning :) The one I was working on didn't have AC. So I jusat popped the motor mount and it slipped right out.
-
most of the body parts/interior parts will be the same. The hood and front clip are different. Fenders may be different but I'm not sure on that one.
-
oh, so you modified the timing cover so you didn't have to take out the engine mount? You should have pulled the engine mount. Takes about 30 minutes and it's well worth it to get that damned thing outta the way. New pump would have had a new tensioner on it, it's some weirdo assembly. I had issues with the tensioner on mine, I couldn't get it to slide back far enough to allow me slack in the belt to put it back together. So I replaced the waterpump so I got a new tensioner. overall it's a gigantic PITA to work on anything on that side of the motor.

if you part out that XJ I'd be interested in a few parts. Like the rear 8.8 and the trans.

92 will be the weaker 27 spline variant. It can be made 29 spline with new shafts and carrier. So if you order a detroit or something for it go 29 spline and get shafts to match. There were 3 trans behind the 4.0 All autos are AW4's Early 4.0 87 to mid 89'ish were BA-10/5's. These have a case split from front to back. from mid 89 until the end of production it was the AX-15 5Spd, these are put together with an intermediate plate, and don't have a big seam running front to back. The AX-15 is a much better trans.

good to see Jeff. Tell me you did the water pump while you were in there! Pulling an engine mount and timing belt to do a water pump is just a dumb design.

if you want some stock HD coils I've got the ones that came out of the front of the 87. you'rs for whatever shipping would be.,
-
have you degreased the engine before looking? My guess is valve cover, it's the most common, and will leak down the back of the motor, making it hard to find.
-
well, I did put the Detroit in, but that was just popping the carrier and setting backlash. Just never hought to check the pinion drag. You live and learn, at least the pinion survived intact. I'm going to run it till it dies and put an 8.8 i nnext summer. No sense in fretting over a D35 :)

That is why it pays to have pro's do your gears  that's why it pays to make sure when you buy a used axle you check those sorts of things.

Adding 97+ doors and power windows/locks?
87manche replied to m0brando's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
no, not the hinge, on the striker plate.Go to that link I mentioned earlier, it has pictures of the whole process. -
your prob gona hate me for this.....

I've got a custom roll pan that came out of my MJ. You can have it for $50 and shipping. It's heavy, made of steel. it was welded to my quarter panels and to the hitch. You can see that the hitch receiver hides behind the plate. -
It will have a D35. I don't think there were any other options in those years. the 8.25 is a chryco axle, and appeared in 91, after the chryco takeover in 88.
-
88 is the last year that the AMC owners club recognizes. Honestly though, they were built using AMCs parts until 90, then Chryco did the first redesign of the engine management stuff. http://www.amonational.com/info.htm

whatever you want to do man. Most of us prefer going the opposite way. You going to take it to the strip? Comanches have a proud racing heritage. Anyway, the 97 doors will fit, you'll need the 97+ striker as well, and it will need to be slightly modified to fit, just elongating the top hole. -

Yes, but it won't fit directly, it will need the holes wallowed out a bit to bolt onto your existing door frame. -
you wouldn't happen to have a LWB gas tank skid would ya? I know someone said they had one a while back. That's about the only piece of armor I'm missing.
-
looks like it, mine an AC delete Mj and that's exactly what my engine bay looks like. 3/4 view I hope to put a compressor on that idler pulley bracket someday and do my OBA/. Or move my alternator up there.

oh I know that I've been running on these gears for a month like that. I just pulled the cover to make srue that nothing bad has happened since, and to make sure that there wasn't any grinding going on. I can tell you that when I popped the cover to drain the fluid and inspect it after the nut came lose the fluid was all kinds of pretty silver colors :)

epoxy likely isn't going to hold up the gasoline Eagle. Try getting one of those tank repair kits and using the sealant included wiht those. Epoxy hols up well to methonal/alcohol, but gas softens and eats it eventually.
