87 MJ 4.0 auto running issues...loose dizzy? FIXED
Geonovast replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The whole distributor itself? Yeah that's definitly a problem. Did you check to make sure it's bolted down all the way? -
binding driveline when in 4x4

My dad's got a n 91 XJ with the vac disco, at first I thought the axle had been replaced, but the entire system is there and it could very well be factory. -
binding driveline when in 4x4

You could jack up one side of the vehicle(on level ground, and chock the other wheels), getting one front and one rear wheel off the ground *assuming you don't have a locker*. Turn one wheel, and if see if the other one goes the same speed. -
I'm there!! IIRC, Eagle is too. Look in Connecticut. CW lol, Ironically it was YOU I recognized. I'm sure I saw a few more from here, but they probably had they're real name up and not their screenname.

Basically you need to find an XJ. Pull all the shifter stuff off the trans, and put it on yours, after removing your linkages for the column shifter. I know at least one person (can't remember who) moved the T-case linkages to the column shifter, so it was used for the 4wd. You can put the e-brake handle from an XJ in, although IIRC you'll have to cut a hole in the floor, and get different e-brake cables.

If you have a fuel pressure gauge with a bleed off hose attached using the valve would be a lot safer. Then you bleed it into a container at the rail, and you don't have to worry about it spraying all over your face and arms 10 seconds after you decided to put on safety glasses while you're under the truck disconnecting hoses...

Definitly could be the problem. Also, if it's been sitting awhile, the silp joint can freeze up on the shaft and be very stubborn to break loose.
-
The shaft would be the same...if the motor and trans was the same. Since the auto is slightly longer than the manual, it sits back farther, and so the shaft would be longer. The 4.0 shafts are also longer than the 2.5/2.8 ones, because the trans sits back farther.

Is there something you don't like about having the 5 speed? Usually the swap goes the other way around  You can put a full time (np242) case behind your manual. It'd be a lot easier, since the swap to auto is possible, but it's not the easiest thing to do. About the missing shaft...are you thinking someone was bumming around on dry pavement in 4wd and broke something?
-
Torx is one of those things that if I could go back in time and "take care" of the guy who invented it I would. EVERY tool, save one, I have broken was done during the removal of a torx bolt. I fuggin hate'm and refuse to put them back in once they come out. UCA Axle bolts :headpop:

2wd to 4wd swap vs rear wheel lockers
Geonovast replied to f1tbiker6's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
A 4wd swap is fairly easy. I've done one and I'm doing another in the next few weeks. Simple list- -4wd front axle with matching gear ratio to your rear axle(depending on what your current rear axle is, and how you're doing your rear lift, it you may consider doing an upgrade while you're at it) -4wd transmission -transfercase -front driveshaft (they are different dependant on motor and trans -rear driveshaft (XJ one will not work, easiest way is to have your current one cut down) -transfercase shift linkages Why not do a 4wd swap AND a rear locker? :brows: -
Wow, didn't know that existed. I put mine up. I clicked around a bit, but only recognized one other person.
-
IIRC my 83 J10 was stock height with spring under in the front and spring over in the back.
-
I haven't actually tried this yet, but for the axle UCA bushings, Jeepco suggested throwing the bushing in the freezer, heat up the housing just a tad, and the bushing will basicaly pop right in.

I've heard a lot of bad stuff about harbor freight tools, especially their ball joint presses. But I've also talked to people who buy all their tools there and claim they're better quality than Craftsman, Mac, etc. I've only used the cheaper ball joint press, but I never bent it out of shape.

Well, I suppose, if you're REALLY good at fabrication, it could be made to work... Cause that's sooo much easier than greasing a latch? Gull wing MJ? Power remote activated with linear activators and suicided to open from the back side... bling, bling,, shaq anit got crap on my mj... oh yeah,,, pass me that $h!t mannn,,,, :chillin: Could always get some tracking from a minivan..

I would agree. I have the Cherokee Chilton and it's pretty horrible.

 No, my bad. Any year 4 door XJ FRONTS will work on an MJ.
-
2 door ones will not work.

Another quick brake question
Geonovast replied to Geonovast's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Anyone? I really need to know by saturday. -
yep, late 80's/early 90's with the 2.5 litre 4 cylinder I thought it was 93 when they started putting the Ax-15 behind the 4 popper.
-
Actually, longbeds are in front of the axle. Shortbeds are behind :D Really? Hmm. Didn't know that. Probably since I haven't spent much time underneath a longbed 8)
