Well, things aren't really looking fine. It still leaks a good amount, still smokes when I stop, and the blood pressure is still really high. I haven't been driving it too much. And not at all around town, it hasn't even been to town yet. We've been zipping around in Jo's mom's car.

Well, if you see a smoking red XJ on the side of the road, it's probably me.

Change of route... Sorry Brent, I know you were looking forward to us stopping by on the way home, but it seems that going through Illinois may be safer this time..

I was going to tell him the same thing, but the connections on the fuel filter and on the tank itself are just rubber lines with hose clamps.

Pick up a couple of D35s (shouldn't be too hard to find some for free) and practice swapping the gears around. -
Tilt "smokers" window swap side to side?

A lot of them don't have the wing/smoker windows. -
Yeah, sounds like you were able to do what I did with my AX-5. Glad to hear you got it going.

Up to you. 29 spline 8.25 is close to D44 strength, and it's probably going to be easier to find a 29 spline carrier and shafts, than a 44 with the gearing you want. Any 97+ 8.25 will be 29 spline. -

:agree: And a 4.5" kit you'll definitely want adjustable lower and upper arms, adjustable tracbar, and appropriate sway bar links. Be sure to do an alignment after any height change. Toe-in alignments are ridiculously easy. Good writeup here http://www.4x4xplor.com/alignment.html -

Your front will be fine, you'll just have to pay for a re-gear unless you happen to find a 3.73 D30 to swap in(good luck) You'd only need to change the carrier in the back because the 29 spline spider gears are bigger than the 27s and won't fit in the 27 spline carrier. You still have to do a gear setup even if you're just changing carriers and keeping your gears, so you might as well do them all at once. Unless, of course, you find a 3.73 29 spline 8.25 or D44. As for bearing size, if you mean the wheel bearings, I believe they are the same. Brakes will be the same between 27 and 29 splines. All that's different are the shafts, spiders, and carrier. -

Someone must've swapped in the 3.55s on the XJ at some point, or converted from an auto to a 5 speed. No, the 27 spline shafts aren't smaller than a D35. The 27 8.25 is still an upgrade from a 35, and you'll be able to upgrade to the 29 spline stuff if you do a re-gear, as you'll need to change carriers. -
another brake question?
Geonovast replied to 90eliminator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You can pull the calipers off, and compress them as you would do during a pad change. Then just compress, then pump the pedal, back and forth a few times. This is really only a bandaid, they'll be likely to seize up again. Your best bet is new calipers. -

If you're going as high as 4.5, you should start researching the advantages to going SOA, especially if you're changing the axle anyway. I wouldn't lift it until you re-gear. Any size tire sucks on 3.07 gears, even moreso if it's over stock sizes. -
XJ's still worrying me, so I'd like(If I can) see who of you kind, generous souls are on my way home in case I need help or just need to chill somewhere while my Dad comes to get me. Here's the route. Basically; Missouri-Bringing 54 up through Jefferson City to 19, 19 to 61, through Hannibal, then straight up into Iowa. 61 becomes 218/27. Iowa-Take 218/27 up to Meet 151, the zigzag through Marion, Dubuque, then keep going on 151 until I hit Madison Wisconsin-Just 151 from Dubuque until Madison. If any of you are near my route and are free/willing to lend a hand on Sunday, I would greatly appreciate your help, were I to need it.

Mostly, you still stole 231

Well at least the XJ will get you 4wd. Also, I would get the 8.25 in right away if you can. Then when you do your re-gear down the road, if you pay for a re-gear instead of new axles, you can upgrade to the 29 spline shafts.(Carrier is different between your 27 spline, and you missed the cutoff by one year) -
Nobody made you look at the thread. Didn't I call that one? :fs1:
