Little update... still not starting I put my good plugs in, but still wouldn't fire. Once my help arrived, I had him crank it while I grounded out a spark plug to the body. Right from the coil I get spark, and from the distributor I get spark. Either there's a grounding issue to it doesn't fire while in the motor, or I did screw up the timing when I changed the chain. Tomorrow is a parts run. I'm getting new battery cables, connectors, cap, rotor, and plug wires, and a new grounding strap for running from a head bolt to the firewall. If it still doesn't work, I'm gonna have to find a way to see if the Cam's off a tooth. Don't have the coil from the donor truck, and of course I sold my spare Renix ones a few weeks ago.

Nope, didn't pull the distributor. Only way that could be off is if I somehow screwed up the timing chain when I replaced it, and even if I did somehow mess that up, there's no way it's 180 off. Yup, wires are in the right order. I've got my 4.0 MJ sitting right next to it for jumping purposes, and the wires are all matched up. The cap is ok... but not the greatest. Old motor had new plugs, not the best dist cap New motor had crap plugs, brand new cap(that I somehow didn't get with the motor. So now I'm thinking maybe some combination is making it not run. I put my new plugs in, and I'm trying to find an open parts store for the cap.

Does the CB have its own ground? Or did that get plugged into the connector?

Probably not, violation of right to privacy and all that.

Did you put all the pushrods back in? :dunno:

I picked up an XJ for a friend from a repair shop for $200 because it wouldn't start. They told me they tested sensors, tried ether, nothing worked. $5, trip to the gas station, and 30 seconds cranking later, she fired right up. Drove it off their parking lot, but they told me price before I "fixed" it. Couldn't even say faulty gauge. It read below E. Big one too.

I actually recently had this thought too. Another forum I'm on has a link to a website that lets members put a pin on a world map of where they are, and you can have over the dots on the map to see who's where. Might be neat to have a state-by-state and international directory, but so many members don't even have location on their profile, so it might not be very accurate.

Help..no spark after motor change
Geonovast replied to sinkrun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm having the exact same problem, just got done with the motor swap in the XJ, and no spark. Tested the CPS, and I'm getting infinite OHMs. Pretty sure I busted the CPS either during removal or install. Never thought to pull the sensor/reinstall with the manifolds off. Now I get to change it the fun way. :fs1: :wall: -
4.0 timing chain slop... is this to much?
Geonovast replied to Geonovast's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Got the new chain on, motor all sealed up, and it's in the truck. Tomorrow I'm gonna finish bolting everything back together and hopefully take it for a test drive. -

Upon closer inspection, the sprockets have all teeth, intact. What you guys were seeing was just bad shadowing from my camera in my oh-so-wonderful phone. I've got a 93 2.5 sitting here that might have better sprockets... if I could just get some verification that they are, indeed, the same parts? -

I'll have to take a look closer tomorrow before I got get it. :fs1: -
4.0 timing chain slop... is this to much?
Geonovast replied to Geonovast's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
no, just the chain. I'm extremely limited on funds. The old motor will end up getting rebuilt within the next few months, and will be going back in. -

Not missing any teeth, sprockets are fine. I'm picking up my new chain tomorrow. Thanks guys. -
Am I the only one that checks in here in the middle of the day?
