Depending on the size of the money factor... I'd weld up your spider gears. If you're running meats on the street, expect things to break with a heavy right foot. Off-road and light-footed on road, it should be fine.

 

This is my personal solution, that no one else ever likes, but it's cheap, and I'm 1/4 Jew, so I like it.

I agree with the lincoln lockers, as I've seen so many lunchbox lockers break axleshafts due to sudden locking during wheel spin. I'm hesitant to weld the rear of my MJ, since it's so light, but have had both axles in my YJ welded for several years with no problems.

How about a TrueTrac in both ends?

 

 

Ditto that. I've got one in my front, and it kicks @$$. Handles fine on road in both 2wd and 4wd (no vac disco). And works like a charm off road.

 

 

That or lincoln lock the front if you have a working vac disco.

Welding the rear is just awesome :brows: keep in mind that if you see a lot of street driving be prepared to buy tires. For the front, the true trac is a limited slip right? that equals limited traction ;) I have been running a lock right upfront for 2 yrs, yes I had a problem breaking stock shafts :mad: and as a matter of fact I just broke a 4340 this past w/e :eek: but unless your rig is strictly off road I wouldn't wled both front and rear.

id go loc-rite super easy to install too

just gotta be careful cause when they catch... they kick :eek:

I think you're definitly on the more extreme edge of driving, so your experience with broken shafts is expected. :cheers:

I know a few people running lockrights in front dana 30s on stock shafts that don't have too much trouble.

I was in a XJ at redbird locked f/r with lockrights, stock shafts on 33's. He did have the 8.25 in the rear though. His Dana 30 has held up fine, and we did beat on it a bit to get up some nasty hillclimbs.

Most of the rags say it's almost as good as a locker.

As for me breaking the Yukon Shaft, they made good on it all ready. Looks like it was an improper heat treat, or something like that, cause it broke off funky, and it wasn't a typical place for a shaft to break. It broke on the splines, and no other failure was evident.

You gotta remember that money is a factor in his quest for traction, a truretrack will require him to reset up the gears and all and unless he knows how to do it himself, it will be expensive to have done,a lunch box locker would be a cheaper way to go, no setup involved gear wise, if he is driving it on the street alot, a no slip in the front would be a great choice, they are not harsh when they lock up and he will not even know he has one in 2 wheel drive, as for the rear, does he have a limited slip or open carrier, on an open a lock-rite would be fine and cheaper to buy, if it has a factory limited slip then a no-slip will be the only option for a lunchbox locker for it. I have done the welded spider thing and the problem with it is there will always be stress on the axle shafts when you make a turn at any speed, puts alot of fatigue on the axleshafts over time, with a lunch box it will disengage when not under a load and the axle shafts will last longer, just a few things to consider

Richard everything you said is 100% correct. Setting up gears can be expensive, and if not done right can be down right destructive. As for the harshness everyone talks about with the lockright up front I never noticed it, and my rig was my DD for over a yr with a front locker.

 

You are also 100% correct about the welded spiders stressing the axles, that is why I wouldn't recommend it for a street driven rig. I run an 8.8, and the only issues I have had with my welded rear is the welds breaking on the spider gears one time, I fixed that problemn by filling all the teeth with weld, and then welding a piece of 1/4 plate to one side (still had to get the c-clips in) Percoanlly once I start building my rear 60 I am going with a 35 spline spool :banana: and some yukon moly shafts :evil: hopefully it will hold together to some 42's :dunno:

no offense taken :brows: The guys I wheel with are all on 38's or bigger, so I have issues keeping up with them on 35's, and the guys with lesser rigs on 33's don't go on hard enough trails for me :mad: So I have to take some truly stupid lines to be challenged :nanner: and this is leading to body damage on my rig :eek: I know there is no body left, but I got sheetmetal damage this last weekend :mad: BTW big tires and low gears jamminz.gif
