hgeranium Posted February 17 Posted February 17 My truck came with that two piece plastic skid plate on the gas tank. One was a flat rectangular piece, and the other was curved and protected the edge of the gas tank. for whatever reason a few years ago, in all my wisdom, I took them off and eventually they got thrown away when I moved. Knowing how annoying it sometimes is to get Comanche-specific parts, how big of a deal is not having that? How much do they go for? I can’t believe I threw them away. Even if I don’t need them it makes me sad I got rid of something likely on the truck since it was new.
89 MJ Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I don’t think you’ll have any ill-effects from not having it. It would protect from minor impacts, but really won’t protect much off road. You could even argue it’ll trap dirt and moisture and rot your fuel tank out quicker. I get why you’re sad about it though. There also was a metal skid, but those are hard to come by. Thinking you want another plastic skid?
eaglescout526 Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I have a plastic one. I remember I had a long bed one that had the end cap that sold for I think easily $100 and I have a short bed one that’s missing the 7ft cut off line and the curved piece. Fun fact, short bed ones are made from long bed ones, they are just cut down, hence that line….which I don’t think I have a picture of at all. Honestly, not detrimental to have but nice protection.
llhat Posted February 17 Posted February 17 "years" ago my 89 long bed developed a fuel leak.. guessed it.. corrosion on bottom, dirt trapped tween tank and metal skid... replaced the tank 'then' but did not reinstall the skid... it laid around... "sometime" on a scrap metal run, my dad evidently tossed it.. ( 2010-2012 era).. so it is gone, I've come to terms with it.

I was worried it would rot my tank. Good to know it’s an actual concern instead of just an assumption. I’m definitely still sad about throwing away something worth so much lol. At least I know better now

Ouch. Yeah the collector (or hoarder??) in me really wants to get another set just to know I have all the Comanche stuff. As mentioned before, I probably wouldn’t even put it back on because, since I don’t wheel, I don’t need the protection from skids as much as I need my tank not to rot.

Yeah.. hind site.. the front skid plate and that thick rubber shield below Radiator, etc also made that journey to the world of scrap after I removed it for something... second owner of this 89 since 1997, I may have it documented 'why' i took the front skid off.... maybe not...

pizzaman09 Posted February 18 Posted February 18 I have all of the factory skid plates, rubber mats and such somehow still at 277k miles. I dare not remove the gas tank skid plate as one of my mounting studs is broken off and it's a bit loose. I don't want to risk breaking the other studs.

What does the front skid plate look like/where is it? I’ve heard of it but clearly it’s long gone off my truck. AFAIK the whole front end got frankenstein replaced so it tracks that the skid plate is missing.

I don't have the hard front skid plate but rather the rubber cover connects to the front bumper, sits above the sway bar and bolts to either sides frame rail. It is an odd piece that has three large holes near the front to let some air through I suppose. It kind of protects the leading edge of the engine.
llhat Posted February 18 Posted February 18 mine had rubber, it was above the skid plate... it was a steel skid plate that connected to frame rails, extended from below radiator on an angle downwards ending before the tie rods. I recall when it was on there always had to wipe oil off of it from changing the oil filter ( or seem to recall.. been some years now)

I will agree on getting in the way....
