Thermostat brands

Alright, who is the worst and who is the best? Sure construction should be the same and probably from the same factory but I want to see what we are all running and what results. I have a Mopar in mine right now but it’s failed me and is stuck open. I know Motorad was OEM. Probably Stant was during AMCs run.

Well when I first replaced my T-stat 5 years ago in my ZJ 4.0, I put in a Motorad. It ran fine. Had a problem with overheating again last year, I put in a Murray this time.

FWIW, I haven't heard anything bad about Motorad or Stant, at least not in any of my Jeeps.

It’s interesting you say that. I bought a Murray yesterday from oreillys, just to probably get me by for a few years before changing it again and I looked at it and it said motorad on it.

Hmmm. I’m kinda getting the idea we’re just at the mercy of what we can get and how long it will last.

I had a Motorad fail open on me within a year. I have some Carrols NOS I bought off of ebay. A bit of a tight fit. Also, Flowcooler has revived the Robert Shaw line.

The only thermostat "adventures" I had when I ran the 4.0 ended with me having to buy an OEM one. Several others prior to that misbehaved. Not sure if you can buy them anymore, but I would heavily consider it.

Should be able to. The latest version of the Mopar stat is an 8350 4 more digits and ends in an AD.

I should post that upon further inspection of the old stat, the spring collapsed a little, had gunk on it preventing full closure and the rubber seal on the end of the stat itself was almost nonexistent and water was allowed to flow through. So entirely it was just regular wear kind of failure on this one. But it’s good to have a tab on what’s still good out there.

What are the symptoms of a failed thermostat on a 4.0L?  Will it ever get to temp?

Depends on if the thermostat is fail open or fail close. Also, depends on ambient air temp. So, fail open and winter, at say 32 F, I'd run about 135 F.

I think I do recall my Murray stating it was a Motorad as well. I wasn't paying much attention to that for it was the only T-stat I had. It was third time I've broken down in front of O-O-O-O Reilllllllyyyyyyyy!!!! Auto Curse! And it was the only one they had in stock.

Kinda regretting using the rotozip to cut open the shroud for better access though. No matter what I do, the fan eventually starts to hit it.
