vhfr1289
So I'm 3/4 the way through replacing my entire front suspension on my 91 metric ton and I'm now on the upper and lower control arms and I've run into an odd issue. The upper rear bolt (frame side) is an odd size 15mm is too big 14mm is too small and it's not 9/16 either but the darn thing is in a recessed hole so I can't get an adjustable wrench on it, I'm open for suggestions if anyone else has run into this issue. I also ran into t50 bolts on the axle side which is contrary to all the videos I've seen with the bolts having a flange on it. Its days like today that i really hate working on jeeps, I guess I'm a glutton for punishment because I've owned a 95 YJ since new and its a royal pain in the butt too, it's an end of production model and occasionally I have to buy TJ parts because it's got a mix bag of parts on it. eaglescout526
That’s weird. I recall the UCA at the frame to be around 18-19mm on both the bolt and nut. Sure we’ve all seen the axle and frame but some pics would actually help. Sounds like someone dug through their bolts bin and stuffed in whatever worked in place of the factory hardware. derf
Could also be a mangled bolt head that keeps the right socket from fitting.
Eagle_SX4
The upper control arm axle side bolts were t50 torx from the factory mine were the same way. Can you get a look at the bolt head? It may be that it was replaced with a 12 point head. Those can be tricky to get a wrench on sometimes. Especially if slightly rounded. If 15 mm is to big and 14 mm is to small the only size in between is 9/16. I suggest using the 9/16 on an extension and using a hammer to force it on to the bolt. I have done that before. pizzaman09
Sounds like a Whitworth bolt... Jokes aside, if you want it off, external nut extractors do a great job of fitting any sized bolt, particularly if you use an air hammer to put them on. vhfr1289
So just to update yall evidently I didn't need to put a socket on it in the first place because it was one of these things(see picture below), when I looked at it the other day the daylight was fading fast and it was rather dirty in the hole it was hidden inside. I was able to get back to it Saturday and was successful in completing the replacement of everything on the driver's side and with any luck I'll be able to wrap up the passenger side on Wednesday. Thanks for the suggestions though, they are appreciated even though it wasn't as much of a problem as I originally thought.
llhat
a captive nut on this end, should have a regular bolt extending thru the bushings and arm the captive nut wedges against an internal cavity and allows manipulation of the bolt without a wrench needed on the nut side.
