Beachbum1236
Hey everyone. I've been working and testing a lot of the wiring in the MJ, and now its time to look at the Temp gauge on the cluster. I haven't pulled the cluster out yet, but will do so soon. I was also thinking about putting a new sensor in. If anyone has any suggestions at to what to look for if it still doesnt work after the new sensor and a check behind the cluster, it would be appreciated. Thanks! Beachbum1236
Thanks roger21maynard. I looked at that yesterday actually and found the wire attached. I pulled the sensor and cleaned it a bit, then wound some plumbers tape around the threads and put it back in. Then to make sure the connection was touching securely, I applied slight pressure to the clip and slipped the pink wire back in to the sensor, and still nothing. hopefully either this afternoon or tomorrow I'll pull the cluster and make sure it has the pink wire going to it. thanks again for the help and any suggestions. And thanks for the link to the site, the last picture is the sensor I pulled*. Chris

Chris This will help you narrow it down: 1. Ignition to RUN. Pull the wire off the sensor. The gauge should go to C. If not, 2. Touch the coolant sensor wire to ground. The gauge should go to H. If it does, replace the sender. If it does not, you have an open circuit to the gauge, or the gauge itself is bad.

mjeff87
Don't wrap the sensor threads with anything....you'll loose the ground. That might just be your problem in the gauge not working. Jeff

It was although not working even before I wrapped the threads, so i'll try Hornbrod's trick to see whats up. All you guys are a great help! Beachbum1236
the trick worked. I took the tape off and still nothing, but touched the pink to the ground and it went to H. I'll be replacing the sensor soon! Thanks again for the help! Chris

If you are unsure of how to do these things, and mechanical troubleshooting too, invest in a set of Factory Service Manuals. They can be found on Ebay quite often. If you plan do most of your own work on your MJ, they will pay for themselves many times over.
mjeff87
also, as an FYI, the sending units for the gauge vs. idiot light are different. Physically, they look the same, but an idiot-light sending unit won't work with a gauge, and visa versa. Jeff

Make sure in the description it says that it is for the gauge, not the light. I actually had to end up ordering mine online since no one carried it locally. Beachbum1236
Thanks guys. I'll make sure that the sending/sensor units are for the gauges and not idiot lights. I am also getting a new gauge cluster with a Tach meter. Yea, I've got a Haynes Repair manual, but it doesn't have any part numbers and, the troubleshooting section is kinda small, not much about any tricks or anything. not to mention the section about the gauge/instrument cluster is a few sentences long. hope to get the new cluster soon, and not much trouble installing it. Thanks again for the help. You guys have really made it easier to fix this MJ up and get it in good running condition! Chris
jaekl
It truly is amazing how you guys change the upgrade the instrument cluster so easily. Back in 1986 after the meeting with the manager and consulting the factory, the salesman came back as "we don't think it can be done". What a line that turned out to be. I did a little research, went to the junkyard and plugged it in. Best way to buy a new car. Pick out a base model that nobody wants and if the dealer won't add them just find a late model wreck and add all the options you want. I've had a full gauge package in a base Cherokee for 20 years. Remember it can't be done.

Pick out a base model that nobody wants and if the dealer won't add them just find a late model wreck and add all the options you want. I've had a full gauge package in a base Cherokee for 20 years. Remember it can't be done. Gotta love them dealers. I used to own (in addition to my Jeep at the time) a 1993 Honda Accord LX -- the mid-level model of the Accord. Mine didn't have a rear sway bar, but the pricier EX did. So I went to the dealership to buy the pieces to add a rear sway bar. The parts drones told me it couldn't be done. I questioned it, and they called the parts manager over and he said the same thing. I asked why. He didn't know -- he just knew it couldn't be done. So I went to the general manager, and complained that the parts department was refusing to sell me probably $300 worth of parts because they didn't think I could do what I damned well knew I could do. He said he'd look into it. Several days later, he called back to say that he had confirmed that the parts guys were right, the EX rear sway bar could not be fitted to the LX model. I asked why not. "Because the EX has dual exhaust, and yours has a single exhaust," was the answer. Sounded reasonable -- except that I knew better. My ex-wife had an EX one year older than mine, and my brother at that time managed a Speedy muffler shop. Both models had exactly the same exhaust, except that the EX muffler (which was mounted at the very back of the system) had two chrome outlets where the LX had a single chrome outlet (and the DX had a single non-chrome outlet). I wrote the owner of the dealership a letter explaining exactly why his parts guys and his general manager were idiots, and I never went back to that dealership for anything. mjeff87
I've just got a mental image of Eagle stuck in my head, with a thug cap (on backwards, of course) sitting in a tuner car with a 15" tach, A-pillar gauge pods, a huge wing on the back, and a Folger's coffee-can fart tip muffler. It's very unsettling...... :D Jeff (I confess, I used to drive a Kia....until I demolished it......)

Don't forget the 2KW sound system and the under carriage painted the same color as the body. Yeah that does paint a weird picture I see your point, Image Not Found here's how I see it; Eagle is a pretty smart guy,,, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Honda parked at his home... :D Oh and you forgot about all the stickers slapped on the fender, hood, quarters, and windows,,,, but then again you see that on jeeps too..... Point is ricers give all white boys a bad name, but its just a stage, I mean I use to have a slammed S-10 and thought I was "COOL" ...
