yet another tonneau cover thread

Recommended Posts

Hello I searched for tonneau covers, not surprisingly, MJ specific tonneaus aren't available (other than the now-gone Downey). One of the members here has a TonnoPro 42-304 that fits nicely , but from what I read on some reviews some people have issues with this brand. Once my MJ is restored I'll be using it as a truck so I'm looking for a reliable, practical tonneau cover (roll-up, trifold, etc) that fits my 6' MJ bed that can hold a few inches of snow (I live in CO). I've owned different tonneaus on other vehicles, had a Backflip that worked great until the foam under the aluminum got wet from snow and the freeze/thaw cycle ruined the finish and got really heavy, otherwise great cover, I wouldn't mind a nice roll up. Also had the classic roll ups and even a retractable one. Some people have used older Ford Ranger and Chevy S10 covers, does anyone have other covers besides the TonnoPro and Downey? Not really interested in a fiberglass cover as I'll still have full  use of the bed as intended to haul stuff, just need something to keep stuff out of sight and relatively dry. Thanks

I ran a North Mountain cover on my MJ for a 94 Ford Ranger. It was off of Amazon. My parents run North Mountain covers on two of their trucks too. They seem to hold up very well.

How does it fit, any detailed pictures? This one? Amazon Link

That looks like the one. It would be perfect if it were 1/2” longer, but it never leaked when it rained. I don’t have any great pictures, but I will make up for quality with quantity.

It sits pretty low, which I like

Rolls up nice and tight too

Looks great! Really like the blue color

Are there ribs in it? Do you think it could be modified to fit around the sport bar?

It does have ribs. I think there are two of them, plus the two at the ends. I wish it could be used with the sport bar, but the rails that run along the tops of the bed sides are just narrow enough so that they hit the sport bar. I wish there was an option out there for those of us who want the sport bar and a tonneau cover.

Looks like fiatslug already linked it above. Surprisingly, it’s only gone up $25 in price in the last 4 years.

Thank you. It’s Brilliant Blue Metallic. Chrysler used it from 94-97. My build thread might have the exact info on it if you need more information.

I was going to repaint my 89 in the original white, and changed the sun-damaged blue interior to black, but changed my mind to having it painted in a darker color such as black or charcoal, now I’ll be considering the same blue, looks great! I think Dodge used it on their 94-00 Ram trucks and Dakotas. I think I’ll get the same tonneau, looks pretty good. Thanks

You mean the rails that attach to the bed? Can’t they be notched to clear the bar? When/if you get a chance can you snap some pics of the rails installed? Thanks

Correct, the rails that attach to the bed that the cover velcros to. They might be able to be notched, I’m not sure. Depending on how the weather is when I’m home and if I can find the cover, I’ll try to snag some pictures. It’s been the better part of 3 1/2 years since I had the cover installed, so I can’t remember how bad the interference was.

Funnily enough, my truck was also white with a blue interior and I planned on painting it a dark gray. None of the pictures in this thread show it, but the color is much brighter when the sun hits it. And it hides dirt very well.

Nice! I'm sure the color looks a lot nicer in person.

An excellent option is the truck covers USA cover. It’s a retractable aluminum setup. They have custom made an MJ specific cover for at least a couple of us here on CC. It’s definitely not the cheapest option but it is phenomenal.

I couldn't remember the brand!  had one of those on my 2006 Frontier Nismo, definitely worth it if you're willing to sacrifice some room for the canister where the tonneau rolls, I really liked mine, always worked regardless of temperature and looked great until I sold the truck. I'll see if I can get a quote, otherwise I don't mind a simple reliable roll up vinyl cover. Thanks

Curious on what the cost on that is if you know/remember

I just contacted them, they sent me the dimensions to confirm (see attachment), they may lower the cost if more people order it, I'll have to ask. I don't think the Comanche beds are different  through different years (1986-1992) except for the length (6'-7')

I think around $1,400. But that was at least 4 years ago. Their customer service is the best.

Definitely! Loved mine years ago. That’s not bad for the price, considering its security, quality and reliability, I was looking at the pictures, did you order your cover with the ladder rack mounts? Did you get the rack? How easy is it to remove/attach the rack? Thanks, and thanks for sharing the pics.
