First mod… have mechanic install a 3” lift on it ( https://www.roughcountry.com/product/jeep-suspension-lift-kit-625-20 ),I don't care if it is an RC lift, this truck won't be used for heavy off road use, already have a LJ with a Teraflex lift for such activities, truck sat on mechanics lot for a couple months (he was too busy to work on it). Picked it up and started working on it, first project: remove bed, clean undercarriage and raptorline it, and, while the tank was dropped, replace fuel pump, only pump i found was an amazon “a-prime” pump that worked but fuel level didn’t…later replaced with a proper MTS unit.

Hello, here’s my build. As purchased, 1989 Comanche Sport Truck, stock, unmolested, originally purchased from a car flipper, it was intended to be used as a daily driver…4 years later and still in restoration/modification. First picture is the seller picture, second picture as purchased.

New Pump not working/priming JPSU-6P4.0
Elwiscon replied to Elwiscon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I usually fill up when the tank is about 1/4 full, as a rule of thumb regardless of vehicle, the strainer on these fuel pumps is a little loose, i put a zip tie around it, hopefully the zip tie plastic won’t be dissolved by the gas -

New Pump not working/priming JPSU-6P4.0

That was my first choice but could not find a bosch pump, just the Amazon generic pump and the MTS, MTS was out of stock for months so ended up with the AMZ one. I may grab another MTS, as prevention, but hopefully this one will last -

Thank you, I also slightly squeezed the spade connector with neeedle nose pliers for a tighter fit to make sure it didn’t come loose. Also cleaned and greased (de-ox) the harness connection -

You’re correct, took the pump out yesterday and noticed the spade ground connector came loose, likely while maneuvering the pump to get it in or when tapping (with a brass chisel) the lock ring. I took it out, connected the ground, reinstalled, started the truck and engine turned over right away, and best of all, my fuel gauge is working I’ll just replace the old rubber fuel lines as prevention in the next couple of days. I had an “a-prime” amazon pump that pumped but the level indicator never did, thats why i went my MTS, a lot of fellow MJ owners swear by it. Thanks -

New Pump not working/priming JPSU-6P4.0
Elwiscon posted a topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hello just replaced my fuel pump, i installed a crappy amazon one that pumped but the level sending unit crapped out, finally got the MTS JPSU-6P4.0 and had time to install today, Amazon pump was working when i took it out, i installed the JPSU-6P4.0 and to my dismay truck cranks but the pump isn’t pumping, as there’s no pressure on the fuel rail. I unplugged it, ran 12V directly to it and i can hear it running, i also checked for voltage at the undercarriage connector, ill disconnect the supply line to see if any gas comes out. As far as i know these pumps are great. What could I have done wrong? There’s about 3 gallons of fuel in the tank so I don’t think it’s out of gas, any ideas? I’ll try to get back on it tomorrow, thanks. -
Turns out the starter solenoid was the culprit, after testing everything I could think of I found out that the solenoid wasn’t engaging, not even with a direct connection. Took the starter to NAPA, they tested it and didn’t work, to my surprise they gave me a free replacement (lifetime warranty), I installed it in less than 15 minutes, connected the battery turned the key and it cranked nicely. Turns out reversing jumper cable polarity damages starter solenoids, at least that was my case
-
Correct, theres only 2 wires to the starter, the smaller ignition from the relay and the larger constant power from the battery or relay stud, have constant voltage and voktrage on the ignition once the key is turned, the body/casing is the ground, checked all,
-
Took it to NAPA, they supposedly tested it and said it works, I connected it directly to my MJ battery and nothing, even connected it to my work van HD battery and doesn’t work so the only way to find out is try a new one, we’ll see.
