dreaminbohemian
I bought this truck in November. Diff covers were leaking so today I pulled and scraped and snapped some pictures while I was in there. 3.73 gears and 32” tires Aussie Locker. Rear diff oil was two tone black and blue/grey. Ran a magnet through the catch pan and found some small metal shaving but nothing large. No visible chipping in the gears but I didn’t jack the truck up and roll through. I know, but I was in a hurry and loosing daylight. Front diff oil had a brown color and seemed thicker. Less metal shaving. Is this enough metal to be concerned with? I’m supposed to drive 300 miles tomorrow night. Pictures are (1) rear diff oil (2) rear diff (3) metal from rear (4) front diff (5) metal from front The magnet is 3/4” in diameter
WranglerMangler
I usually have more build up on my diff magnets between oil changes than what’s on your magnet. I’ve also seen the blueish gray fluid come out too. Doesn’t appear to be anything too serious IMO. If your concerned, change the oil again after your 300 mile trip. Do you have a magnet in your diff at all? Usually a pretty good indicator of what’s going on in there. Shavings are ok, chunks are a problem. I always JB Weld a high power magnet to my diff covers and T case drain plug. Good luck Sir.
Gojira94
To me, looks like the rear diff ring is shimmed too close to the pinion for sure. At this point it’s not going to get any worse but backlash has probably opened itself up to > .020”. It probably ran somewhat hot soon after the installation but not really a concern with heat now. Likely a little too much backlash now, the R&P will wear out sooner than it otherwise would have but still many miles before you get to that point. cruiser54
don't worry about it. Seen lots worse. Enjoy your trip.
gogmorgo
Yeah that’s not enough to be a concern. Diffs tend to shed some steel off the gears because they slide against each other. Good quality, clean gear oil helps but you’ll still get some metal flake. Especially after a fresh install and the gears are breaking in. Doesn’t look like the teeth are wearing excessively, or getting sharp. If it’s not making noise and there’s no chunks, don’t worry about it. Drahcir495
We recommend changing the fluid every 30k miles. And yes, I’ve seen a Lot worse too.
