Is it possible to install Powerstop Brake kit, (rotors, pads), on a 1988 Jeep Comanche?

Recommended Posts

The brakes on my 1988 Comanche are not very good. I have plenty of brake pedal and the rotors and pads are good,  but it doesn't stop very fast. I'm concerned if I had to "slam" them on, I might not stop in time!

I just saw a TV show where they upgraded the brakes on a Jeep Cherokee XJ to Powerstop brake rotors, pads and installed braided steel brake lines, (nice look too).

On the Powerstop.com website they don't list any Comanche kits, however, they do list brake kits for late model Jeep Cherokee XJ's through 2001.

Is it possible to upgrade 88' Comanche stock brakes to Powerstop brakes using the Cherokee XJ kit?

Thanks,

I would first look into to the dual diaphragm brake booster modification.

Nice looking MJ

Ok, thanks! I saw that RockAuto has full drop-in brake kits from R1 Concepts with drilled and slotted rotors, etc. for about $325.00

Just not sure how much more "stopping power" this would buy me.

Yes, if it fits a 97-01 you would just need to swap the knuckles on your front axle to the newer style 97-01 knuckles, I'm 99% sure there is other years with the same knuckles, but I can’t remember off the top of my head.

P.S

You got a sweet rig, Black is the best MJ color

It doesnt look like you have any extra weight, huge tires or lift so stock brakes should be adequate. I don't know when mine were changed last but they don't look new and I can still lock the rear wheels up. There might be something else going on in your brake system

But I do like powerstop products, have them on most of my vehicles. R1 concepts is a good brand too. If you go offroad with yours, you might want to stay away from the drilled and slotted option though

I second the idea to stay away from the drilled and slotted rotors.  I put them on a few of my vehicles and find that they vibrate sometimes under braking.

Power stop is the only brand of brake rotors I've found that didn't warp on my 99 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight after 2 weeks of driving one them.  Power Stop makes quality products for sure.

On my Comanche, I was a bit disappointed in my stopping power even though feel was great and firm.  I upgraded to some nice Hawk HPS pads, the more aggressive pad has really improved the stopping power.

@pizzaman09 I have drilled and slotted rotors on my street vehicles. But I wouldnt put them on my offroad vehicles that could get mud and rocks stuck in there. And Hawk is another great option for pads. Ive used them in the past when I would piece everything together but have been using powerstop now mostly for the convenience of an all in one kit

I have found similar issues with my street cars, particularly a BMW M5 where in the winter the water would freeze into and onto the rotor and then cause a zero brake situation when backing out of parking spots.
