AMC AMX at the junkyard!?

Not going to pretend I know much about AMX’s and Javelins but at least from looking at pictures, I think this was an AMX. Even with the fire damage and rust, it’s still crazy to see this in a junkyard. I’ve seen people save wayyyy worse cars.

Wow that’s a 69 big bad green 2 seater AMX, someone could’ve got good money for that even in terrible shape. They only made 284 big bad green amx’s in 69 again I don’t know how people just throw that way

1968 or 1969 AMX. The engine badges were on the rear quarter panels and they're gone, so no way of knowing if it was a 290, 343, or 390.

What a shame. I owned a few of them -- I loved 'em. Basically unbeatable in autocross. We loved going up against Corvettes. The Corvettes back then were all nose heavy and didn't handle worth [bleep]. Drove 'em nuts to be beaten by a Rambler.

Bbg wasn’t out until 69, if the op has the vin it can be decoded and tell us what engine and trans combo

I've seen too many people trying to sell an allegedly valuable car but they can't find a buyer.

They get a whole lot of "I wish I could..." and "Someone should grab that" responses but no one shows up with cash.  So it ends up getting scrapped.

That has happened to me once.  Almost twice.  I hated to scrap the old CJ but after a couple of months no one showed up.  Fortunately someone got the J10 though they stole it from me at the price they offered.  Still, it was more than the scrap yard.

"Back in the day," I had an opposite experience -- involving a 1968 AMX 390 4-speed.

Driving around one day, I saw a rather ratty-looking AMX and stopped to leave a note on it to call me if the owner ever wanted to sell it. To my surprise, a few days later I got a call from the owner. He was interested in selling. So we made an appointment for me to go look at it. It needed a lot of work, but it ran and drove, so I declared that I was interested. While we were talking about the car and life in general, it had come out that I was a Vietnam veteran and the owner was a Marine Corps Reserve instructor, so we had that bond in common. He asked me what I thought a fair price might be. I juggled some numbers in my head and finally asked if he'd take $1,000 for it.

He said "No," and my heart sank. "Oh, [bleep]", I thought. "He knows what it's worth."

Imagine my shock when he then said, "I can't take that much for it, because I know how much work it needs. How about $800?"

Done!

I don't think I knew that. My old man was there from 69-71, worked with the Chieu Hoi under Hop Tap in III Corp and IV Corp. I have 2 sets of his tiger stripes. When I was a kid in the 70s, every Sunday at my grandparents' house there were vets from WWII, Korea and Vietnam around. One by one they've all gone. My old man is the only one left, he'll be 80 in January. Every time I see a vet wearing a Vietnam hat or shirt, I make a point of speaking to them, thanking them and telling them what I remember of the men who served in all the wars, and how much they're appreciated and missed. You're very much appreciated.

He and I are about the same age. I'll be 80 in February.

Please give him my regards.

I did give him your regards, in person. Had a 3 day visit with him and his wife in Linville, NC December 11th-13th. Today is his 80th birthday, talked to him for quite a while earlier. We recalled his 40th birthday, which I remember (I was only 13). His side of the family were funeral directors, though he opted for a law degree after Vietnam and not too long ago retired from international finance law. Back then, my grandfather hooked my dad's law partners up with a hearse and pine casket to ferry him to his surprise party at a restaurant on College St. in downtown Charlotte. A good time was had by all.

So... your birthday is coming up in a few weeks. Early Happy Birthday from me and my old man.
