Get a diagnostic on my MJ

Recommended Posts

I inherited a little bit of money when my mom passed. I need to spend a little bit on the truck. I'm thinking of taking it to the jeep dealership to have them go over it and give me a list of things that must be done. Should I tell them they won't be doing the work or not?

Any of us live near Virginia that could give recommendations or actually do the inspection?

Virginia, who is gonna do the necessary repairs after the diagnosis?

Will depend on what needs to be done. Suspension to a suspension, clutch--not sure yet, drivetrain--not sure but all would be taken to someone that specializes in that.

I will affirm the comments from Cruiser related to techs. at the Jeep dealer(s).

I had a cruise control issue on my 2000XJ a few years ago that I could not fix, since I did not have the Chrysler-specific "DRB" scanner that can talk to the cruise control functions in the PCM.   I took it to the nearest dealer, and the dealer said they had no techs that could diagnose the issue.

I called the next closest dealer, and explained to the service advisor I used with warranty issues on my 2014 Wrangler about my problem on the old XJ.   He said they had ONE TECH. in the shop that had worked long enough to be familiar with the 2000XJ cruise control.  (He had been working on Jeeps since the end of the AMC era:rolleyes:

He was able to fix it, and he used it as a learning experience for one of the younger techs. on how old Jeeps were constructed and functioned, and they enjoyed looking at my fairly nice old XJ.

Taking one of our MJ's (or an XJ for that matter) to a Jeep dealer for repairs would be like asking a Ford dealer to work on a 1969 Mustang Mach One.  They would be clueless, for the most part.

I have a friend who has an older cherokee. I'll ask him who works on his.

I definitely wouldn't go to a jeep dealership. The people at my local dodge/jeep/ram dealership refuse to work on my truck because it's a 88 and thr computer doesn't go that far. They begrudgingly put on a trackbar a little while back. But what made me pull away from them was when I saw them pull my jeep in the shop and they whipped it in tires screeching and almost kicked the back end out and hit a car lift. After that I told them bring my truck out I don't want my oil change I'm never doing business again. My truck is 35 years old and is now a peice of automotive history. It's not a beater toy!

Asheboro North Carolina. Terrible dealership. The main tech didn't even know a Renix engine. Believe me. The only thing I get from them is genuine oil filters. When they did to that track bar it was only because one guy had a '99 XJ and knew how to do that. But other than that I think all they know how to do is do tires, oil change and diddle around with electronic devices to diagnose and fix all this new crap

BJ Wilkes is "Tipton 4x4."  Longtime member of Midsouth Jeeps.  He can work on anything.

His shop is in Munford.

You can tell him Brent that lives in his grandparents' old house referred you to him.  I met him in the Jeep club.  His dad worked for AMC corporate back in the day.  One family lived in my house for two years between me and BJ's grandparents moving out.  BJ's mom brought his granddad (her father in law) to see the house after I moved in.  He was going blind, but could still see enough of his old place.  He was a WWII vet.  When he passed away a few years later, I took my next door neighbor to the funeral.  She was a WWII nurse, and they had been neighbors from ~1979 to 2010.
