'87 Pioneer Longbed

Recommended Posts

Started sanding the drivers door and cab corner. Bad news is I found a bunch of bondo on the back of the cab. Something hit the cab corner hard. There is damage from about the vents down to the lower body line. However the lower rocker and bed are untouched. IMG_20240717_175730820.jpg.91b495ac743326a314f8d4f90acb5e1e.jpg

A view from inside.IMG_20240717_155612700.jpg.132b0fe56ef95c903e8cec6da6ad3ec2.jpg

Whoever painted it last made a poor attempt to pull it out.

I bought some body hammers and spent about 1.5 hours massaging the panel and it is already much smoother than before I still need to get the rest of the bondo off and see just how good I can make this before I paint it.

Drove to the junkyard today. I gassed up before and after just to see what my gas mileage was after the gear change (4.10's). Wow was I surprised when I learned that over my 100 mile journey averaging about 55-60 I got 23.25 mpg. The best I ever got on the same trip with the 3.07's was 19.

Didn't get much but there was an interesting Cherokee there. It was an '88 that had '92 Briarwood doors, fenders, dash and center console. Also had 96+ motor swap and 96+ seats with the added floor braces for those seats.

Also I found out that there are 3 different wood grain dash bezels. Wagoneer light wood with a matte finish with raised chrome lines around the openings. Briarwood, the same as Wagoneer but darker and no chrome. Country gloss finish with the same color as Briarwood but no raised lines. Now I have all 3. Not sure which one I will put in my truck but it will probably be the Briarwood.

I need to remove the bed before I finish it up. Will be pb blasting the bolts every day so that by Friday when I take the bed off hopefully it will go smoothly.

Got the bed pulled today. There is only surface rust on the spot welds. Nothing else, just a bunch of dried mud. By some miracle I was able to get all 8 bolts/nuts off without breaking any. They will get replaced as they are quite rusty.IMG_20240725_180256729_HDR.jpg.e792d56a9be8dc602544e0c9a41ad491.jpg

Used my engine lift and 6 ratchet straps and pulled it off by myself.IMG_20240725_183155849_HDR.jpg.e78c7c82f441a34a220c6f3352bb8893.jpg

Now I have better access to the damage on the corner. So much bondo:fistshake2:IMG_20240725_190627688_HDR.jpg.f766f63a4f2de89ab89f47a84b4658d9.jpg

Well I got the cab corner fixed as best I could. Put a skim coat of bondo on.

Found some rust holes in the passenger rocker panel. I ordered a new rocker from key parts and will get that swapped in before I paint.1945540475_IMG_20240726_1512283403.jpg.c8426d753ef5d2fefca64154b3374091.jpg

The doors and fenders are pulled off in preparation for painting the cab. I should be ready to paint the cab on Saturday.

Then it will be the doors, hood and header panel.

Recently got Bilstein 5100 shocks on all 4 corners and they are so much better than old the old ones. Had some new cheap pro comps on the front but the Bilstein's blow them out of the water.

Do you know what part number you used for the rear? Stock height? Trying to piece together my suspension overhaul and haven't found a 5100 rear shock. Several posts mentioned the 5125 though for the rear.

My bad I have 5125 front and rear. Rears are Bilstein 33-186542 EXTENDED 24.35 COLLAPSED 15.12. Fronts are Bilstein 24185622 extended 22.09 collapsed 13.58.

The rear shocks are about 1 inch longer when compressed compared to the stock ones so you will need to adjust your bump stomps.

Great, thanks. I'm looking at the 33-185606 for the rear. They are 14.06 compressed, 22.5 extended.

Haven't done much in the last 2 weeks because I got covid. Today I got the rocker fully welded in and welded up the hole in the cowl. Also I installed a 97+ washer reservoir and got it wired and plumbed. Eventually I am going to add the low washer function but that will be later.IMG_20240730_181059501.jpg.94c91b7314f5a835a376d566322ae1d1.jpgIMG_20240816_130721004.jpg.ce9129831a7c60de87d83d55d6b23161.jpgIMG_20240810_163758434_HDR.jpg.23ec39b5d207a35540b8dee4edf55021.jpg
