No EMISS MAINT light bulb installed in gauge cluster

Recommended Posts

I am doing an instrument cluster swap and noticed that it appears there was never a bulb installed in the "EMISS MAINT" light position in my old cluster.  On the new cluster this position is "CHECK ENGINE".

What the deal with that? And what does the "LOCK" light indicate? Something to do with door locks?

I just want thru this. Somebody probably pulled the bulb. Its on a timer. There is no sensor hooked up to anything. When it hits the "magical" time, its a reminder to service your system. Mainly the O2 sensors. Here's the catch, you can't reset it. So take the bulb out. The "reset" was too replace the gear driven timer. Yeah, they don't make those anymore. You can open it and reset the gears, but 30 years plastic won't survive taking it apart.

Its a reminder....nothing more. Has no effect what so ever on engine performance. Take the bulb out.

Thank you, I remember learning about this years ago now. I would have never remembered that. Weird thing is it looks as if there was never a bulb there at all. No signs of wear the contact would have been between the copper traces and bulb holder at all.

2.8L 84-86 Instrument cluster info center filter. I think lock delt with 4wd like that was the Lo indicator and 4wd light was just 4wd part time is engaged

86-90 Renix Era filter for the info center.

Thank you. Bummer that my filter is in such poor condition. Is it possible to polish the the deteriorating clear coat off of it?

I think the antilock is your clue. That is for antilock brakes. I don't think 88s had antilock brakes. I know my 89 doesn't. I don't think that panel is original.

I hear you but both the factory filter from my 88 and the replacement have references to anti-lock. I am 100% sure the one in my 88 idiot light cluster is original.

Isn't CHECK ENGINE used for OBDI codes (blinkes)?

2.8L's and 2.1L TD computer's also had this ability as well. We just don't get alot of 2.8L guys still running original equipment and TDs.

Also what bugs me about this filter is the bezel is for the older 84-86 clusters that used two screws to hold the filter and bezel in place. So if it is an HO filter, it has been swapped around but I have seen some filters with antilock, meaning AMC was having hopes for having a piece of safety equipment in the future and kept the lettering there orrrr there was a very early style we don't know about that was used on say the XJs.

If its not already in the registry here, list it. You'll eventually get a build sheet from one of the guys around here. Maybe antilock brakes were an option back then????

Antilock brakes were not available in 1988. They were an option in 1989.
