WahooSteeler
Got a no crank issue out of nowhere. I've done all the grounding tips from Cruiser, upgraded battery cables. Good voltage at battery and starter relay. Pulled starter solenoid wire off relay and starter engages when connected direct to battery, so I it seems I can eliminate batter, starter relay and starter/starter solenoid as the culprit. Would a bad CPS have no crank? IIRC a bad CPS will still crank but not fire. Since it won't turn over I can't check voltage on the CPS, to my knowledge. Thinking bad ignition switch or NSS. Looking for advice on other things to check. I have a spare coil I will swap in too.
jdog
Bad nss will cause a no crank, does it crank in neutral? As well as a bad starter relay, if you jump the nss wire to ground from the starter relay and it starts then it's a bad nss
Pete M
do you have headlights?

WahooSteeler
Problem solved..........bad coil. I replaced the coil a few years ago with an aftermarket unit when I couldn't find a previous no-start that was a combo of eroded negative battery cable and starter relay. Fortunately I kept the OE one just in case.
jdog
Id still check the nss if it didn't crank
Pete M
but... how can the coil cause a "no crank" condition? "no fire" I understand, but a "no crank"?

Fired right up, let it run for a bit. Started it several more times, no hesitation, drove it, started a couple more times.
cruiser54
That makes no sense.
WahooSteeler
I thought for sure it was going to be ignition switch or NSS. When I get a chance maybe I'll swap the other coil back in and see what happens, I haven't thrown it out yet.

OldManComanche
Maybe you bumped some of the wiring when you changed the coil and that "fixed it"

I also checked most of the harnesses in the vicinity and tried several times to start after doing so. Head scratcher........
