Another random electrical problem

Recommended Posts

I’m sure it gets old troubleshooting others problems for them online, but any help would be appreciated. Yesterday I finally got my MJ running again, and we decided to take it on some small obstacles near our house(performed amazing), but when it became dark I realized we had a lighting issue. Something interesting to note is that I haven’t had any issues with this truck since rebuilding the motor, I have always just flicked on my lights and everything has worked great. Anyways here is the situation. When I turn on my running lights, nothing happens at all. When I pull my switch out to the second click for night time, my tail lights and running lights will not turn on. Also, my gauges/dash don’t work. I checked my fuses and all my gauges are good except one, it’s labeled Park LPS. I’m wondering if anyone knows if the tail lights, running lights, and side markers are all on this same fuse, and why my dash wouldn’t be lighting up now? Thanks all

Also, my headlights work totally fine. Another thing that is random and interesting is my clock on my radio used to flicker unless the lighting switch was turned all the way counterclockwise until it locks in to turn on the lower cab lights. Now it stays on no matter what, no flickering.

Sounds like you might want to do some ground cleaning/upgrades. Also that fuse does control the lamps as well. And if you havent, the front headlamp harness upgrade is a must.

I was about to buy one. Of course after i spend hours on hours researching mechanical problems for my truck I end up having an electrical one. I think I’m going to get all my electrical systems back up and working perfect again. I haven’t had back up lights since getting the MJ running over a year ago

Theres a 7.5 amp fuse on the block that believe it or not runs the power from the switch on the trans to the reverse lamps. I am pretty sure that fuse is in the "Trans" slot. Also the switch on the trans could be bad or stuck.

Yeah I’ve been looking at fixing it for awhile. I believe it’s the switch at the trans because all my other fuses were fine today when I checked. Been looking at doing a NSS rebuild for a couple weeks. I want to get this road worthy so I can take it back to Utah with me

what's the condition of the headlight switch and its connector?

Headlight switch meaning the knob you pull/turn to turn on your lights correct? If so it’s in pretty good shape. If you’re referring to the connector at the fuse box, I did notice that was a little loose.

Thanks. Hopefully I can get this figured out in the next 48 hours. I hate driving at night without my taillights, even though I’m only 8 minutes from my moms to my dads

The knob connects to a switch with a connector on it, it is behind the dash and hard to see

All right so, not nearly as complicated as I thought. I tore off the lower dash to inspect my electrical components and connections. Still prime condition. This truck has been very well maintained as it has been in Arizona it’s whole life. So here’s my question. My back up lights haven’t worked since getting the truck running again 2+ years ago. My dad added secondary back up lights, and I believe he wired them in and used this connector (first pic). My question is, is this connector stock, if not, can a bad NSS (neutral start switch) cause a short in the system, thus causing my fuse to pop. When I connect that wire together it causes the whole system to short out, which is why all my lights weren’t working. I checked my wires running back to my fuse box and they are all in pretty good condition and grounded well. So I don’t think that’s my problem. Thanks guys!

(Second pic is of the secondary backup lights he added)

That connector is stock, but it is for the tag lights and does not connect to gather, no a bad nss will not cause a short in the park lamps. But make sure that connector you are holding isn't plugged into each other
