Comanche production numbers

Hey everyone,

I'm curious if anyone knows how many Comanches were sold with each trim.

I see the general numbers on Wikipedia but I'm mainly interested in how many had the Chief trim package to see how original I should leave my truck (88 chief).

This is all I could find online... and idk how they have 1985 there. I thought MJs were 86-92.

Production numbers:

1985: 29,245

1986: 33,386

1987: 43,070

1988: 43,718

1989: 25,311

1990: 9,576

1991: 5,188

1992: 952

Also saw this in a Hemmings article:

"Buyers looking for a four-wheel-drive sport truck could order a Comanche Chief, but in that model the 4.0-liter engine was optional and the 10-hole alloy wheels weren't available...

The Comanche Eliminator was offered for five years. It returned for 1989 and 1990 with only modest changes. Then, in 1991 Jeep boosted the 4.0-liter engine's power to 190hp, and adopted the advertising slogan: "Absolute power erupts absolutely." That year the company also added a four-wheel-drive Eliminator to the Jeep lineup, a welcome addition since the 1988 Comanche Chief had been dropped after only one year."

because those numbers are for the calendar years, not the model years  :L:

the hemmings stuff has... errors.

Lol Yea I kinda figured as much, and I just take wikipedia at face value half the time.

I'm thoroughly impressed by the knowledge on this forum so I'm hoping someone knows more than what I've been able to find.

There have been posts about trim specific numbers in the past and I don't think they have ever gone anywhere.  I don't think AMC/Jeep kept record of production based on trim.  I will say that the Chief seems to be a fairly uncommon/rare one but idk how much so.  Just don't see them much at all.

Honestly with trucks this old, it's less of a question of how uncommon/rare it is, and more a question of weather it is worth keeping it original.  If it's really clean (no/little rust or body damage), well maintained, and not missing any Chief specific parts (I have no idea what that might be aside from the graphics), then it would be worth keeping original.  If it's pretty beat up, you'd be better off building it the way you want it.

Yeah...not so sure if there are "Comanche Chief" specific parts since this was molded into the door panel of my Pioneer.

Nothing like memorializing the inability to spell....i before e and all that. Maybe it's a trim that we don't know about? Perhaps my truck is even more special.

That's pretty cool lol. I know when I run my vin it says chief so I wonder if there are little easter eggs like that on mine too. When I start my restoration I'll post any I find.

I don't know about you, but most Comanches I see are base, Sportruck and Pioneer, the Pioneer being more prevalent in my neck of the woods. The only Chiefs and Laredos I've ever seen were here; before that, I never knew they existed. I've seen some Cherokee Chiefs, but never Comanche Chiefs before.

Ironically I have owned 3 eliminators and one sport truck. I haven't seen a Pioneer or Laredo in person. Seems like Sportruck was very popular though?

sportrucks were the cheapest model so I'm sure they sold a lot of them.  plus you could add on some of the other niceties like the 4.0 or 4wd without having to step up to the price tag of a pioneer (the middle of the road model).
