Ochoa88
i just had my ax15 transmission rebuilt and I changed the flywheel, clutch and and slave cylinder. After i put it all back together, my reverse gear does not engage. I have driven the truck and have been able to change all 5 gears, but reverse does not work. The original problem was that i would hear a grind if i didnt have the right speed during 3rd and 4th gear. That problem is fixed but i can't go in reverse. Has anyone else had this issue? or no what might be causing this?
87MJTIM
Sounds like you need to take it back to the shop that did the work.
OldManComanche
Does the gearshift lever actually move into the reverse position or is it blocked out of reverse?
Ochoa88
It moves but there is a slight difference when moving to reverse. I feel the other gears move in with a little resistance in between. Reverse does not feel that way.
OldManComanche
MY GUESS IS; reverse shift fork is not engaged in the reverse sliding gear, OR reverse gear or linkage is missing OR improperly installed. Because 5th gear works and reverse doesn't. 5th and reverse are on the same shift rail. Be VERY CAREFUL if you drive the truck, you could get stuck with 2 gears engaged at one time. I agree with 87MJTIM, it needs to go back to whoever rebuilt it. If my guess is correct; the transmission needs to be completely torn down, The reverse gear installation is in the early stages of reassembly so everything needs to come apart to get to it. There is a wedge shaped piece sits on the end of the reverse shift linkage that shifts the reverse gear in and out. That is missing / fell out on assembly. Google; Jeep AX15 Service Manual Transmission. Excellent step by step AX15 disassembly and assembly GOOD LUCK
OldManComanche
Oh by the way, (BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE TRANSMISSION) stick the shift lever in and turn the input shaft. Observe the output shaft as you shift the gears; 5 gears and reverse.
Ochoa88
thanks for the advice.i will try to shift without lever. I just want to make sure i know if its clutch or transmission, since i installed clutch and he rebuilt transmission.
87MJTIM
Don’t know if this is relevant but do the reverse lights work when you put the shifter in to reverse?
Ochoa88
I had read something about that but unfortunately i can use them are reference since they are buggy. I only have highbeams on and my break brake lights don't work. that the next project after this transmission issue gets fixed.

If I understand what you're saying, you cannot use the reverse light because of your head lights/hi beams. These should have nothing to do with the reverse lights. They're on completely different wiring circuits, except for the ground wire. When you move the shift fork into reverse, it closes a switch on the side of the trans that completes the wiring circuit. Back up lights should come on whether or not the lights are on.
Ochoa88
I just meant to say I can’t trust the wiring in my truck because it’s a real mess. But I just got my truck back from my transmission guy. Problem has been fixed. He pretty much said that reverse wasn’t installed right and fixed it. Monday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon with raining days here in L.A, I’m pleased with the time he took to fix it. Now I can move on To the next project. OldManComanche
AX15 is a good transmission, it has it's quirks. BUT you still need to pay attention when you work on it. In this day everyone is in a hurry. If they would slow down and check what they have done, you wouldn't have had to take it back and they wouldn't have had to fix it right the second time. (at least they fixed it)!! Daddy used to say: If you half A** it, you will end up with half A** results! Enjoy Your Truck!
