AW4

You will need the transmission computer (TCU), wiring harness, kickdown cable, and possibly one or two other things I'm drawing a blank on at the moment.

Oh -- and you'll need a shifter. The MJ would have had a column shifter. IMHO, it's much easier to get the floor shifter out of a Cherokee.

if so what years would I be looking for?. Donor Comanches. Are a rare find in Texas

My MJ has a floor shifter for the aw4. What years were they column shifters?

Well, actually that's exactly what I did say ...

You have an '89. That's in the series we call "Renix." You should look for an 87 - 90 XJ Cherokee.

the link in my sig has links for all sorts of swapping info. :L:

and just a point of clarification to what Eagle said, all years of MJ could come with either floor or column shift.  both options were available.

can´t you take the column shifter from a S10?

The steering column is the same -- GM Saginaw -- but the cable connection to the transmission might be different. And you won't have the instrument cluster with the PRNDL window.

Don (Hornbrod) had his set up with an aftermarket PRNDL in a tombstone mounted directly onto the steering column, so there are ways to do it. My opinion only -- it's a LOT less work to just get an XJ floor shirter and use that. No need to change the steering column, no cables to run, no PRNDL to worry about.

Agreed.

Unless you have a love or need for the bench seat/middle seat, or you really like being able to shift from forwards to reverse without removing your hand from the wheel.

You still have cables to deal with on the floor shifter. At the bare minimum, the shift cable itself runs from the shifter, to the driver side of the transmission tunnel (the hole may or may not be already there - it was on my 91), then around to the transmission. For a column shifter, the hole for the cable is located in the very top left of the firewall.

If you want to do it right, there is also a park interlock cable that runs from the shifter to the left side of the steering column. I can't say for sure, but I give it a 99.99% chance that there is no provision for this on the manual transmission column in his truck. This will result in being able to shift the trans out of park without the ignition being turned on, and being able to take the key out with the transmission in gear. This is all handled inside the column on a column-shift column.

I like the floor shifter and bucket seats a million times better, but it's a toss up if it's any easier than swapping to a column shifter.

But an XJ donor vehicle will have all the cables and parts you need. Get a column shift steering column out of an S-10, and you get the other parts for an S-10 with a GM engine and tranny, not for a Jeep MJ.

The manual tranny steering column has the steering wheel lock built into the column. It doesn't need any connection to the transmission or to the floor shifter. Just don't use the Park interlock.

Possibly, but I don't think so.

The bench seat works with the manual transmissions and the mini console. The XJ floor shifter is no different in how much space it occupies -- it fits the same mini console.
