Pete M
so I've got a plethora of allergies and chemical sensitivities (there's literally only one brand of undershirts I can wear comfortably) and one of them happens to be, of all things. chrysler steering wheels. they give my skin a weird "burning" sensation when I touch them. It's similar to my skin touching carpe, but that's a plastic, not a leather. It's honestly hard to explain since I haven't yet found a good comparison for people who don't have such a sensitivity. I first noticed this with my parents' 2016 durango R/T, but also have since sat in a 300 and a JL and they have the same effect. I was wondering if anyone had access to anything that might tell me what type of leather they use on the wheels. It could easily be the black dye too, but the thought just occurred to me that it may not be cow leather.
eaglescout526
Um, Well, its tough to say. There's a sales code option for perforated leather, what ever that is. There is a leather and plastic option for steering wheels as well. As to whether Chrysler is using real leather or not, I can not say for certain. Probably pleather? A lot of the newer leather interiors don't really feel like cow leather if they have the leather option. My two cents.
Pete M
that would be a weird if I was able to call them out on a "leather wrapped steering wheel" not actually having leather in it.

There's leather, and then there's leather ... and then there's leather. It used to be when we saw something that was made of leather we could expect that it was made from a section of the hide from a cow, bull, horse, or sheep. Then they came along with "bonded leather." That's essentially the leather equivalent of particle board -- they take all the leather scraps and dust left over from making things out of real leather, grind it into a powder, mix it up in some sort of glue, and make sheets of so-called "bonded leather." Some of it isn't too bad, some of it is truly awful. And then there's stuff that's made of ( and I've seen ads that literally say this) "genuine imitation leather." Is that generic Naugahyde, or is that bonded leather? I don't have a clue. But bonded leather gets to be sold as leather, and it doesn't even have to be declared as "bonded" leather. It has leather products in it, so it's good to go as far as the FTC is concerned (insofar as I have been able to determine).
Pete M
that could make sense too, as I'm sensitive to various glues and crap too.
DirtyComanche
Have you tried emailing corporate and explaining your problem? They might actually respond... I don't know what you'd do about it, other than maybe using the glove box as originally intended.

There's actually a good chance they have an alternative to the "leather" wheel, as VEGAN is becoming a popular word in new car dealers these days... https://www.peta.org/living/humane-home/vegan-car-interior-options/ (I'm not affiliated with PETA or vegans. )
Keyav8r
You mean it’s not real Corinthian leather as Fernando Lamas told us?
