WesD Posted January 9, 2020 Author Posted January 9, 2020 Edit: Dear God I wrote a wall of text, anyways here's some recent pics of progress (working on brakes).
Liketosmash Posted January 9, 2020 Posted January 9, 2020 Making great progress. Wish I had that tailgate as mine has a nice curve to it but is functional. Very nice find!
WesD Posted March 21, 2020 Author Posted March 21, 2020 Floors done. Heater box and ac installed. Had to build a wire harness for the ac control. Does anyone know if the ac will work without the evaporator freeze switch hooked up?
Ωhm Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 Thermostat switch opens to prevent evaporator icing. May have to jumper wire connector. Signal goes to ECU (A/C Request).
WesD Posted March 27, 2020 Author Posted March 27, 2020 Some progress on the rear cab corner. Dash back together. Need to find a radio mounting plate.
WesD Posted March 27, 2020 Author Posted March 27, 2020 Clutch flushed and bled. New parking brake cable installed. Rear WIndow installed. That was very difficult and I'll never do another window again. Well worth paying to have it done.
WesD Posted March 29, 2020 Author Posted March 29, 2020 Seat brackets fabbed up and test fit is good! The fuel sender was rebuilt last summer and look at that rust! Having a hell of a time getting the gas tank up, any ideas?
WesD Posted March 29, 2020 Author Posted March 29, 2020 Ha, that won't help me get the fuel tank in the straps! I might be pulling the driveshaft.
WesD Posted March 29, 2020 Author Posted March 29, 2020 She drives. Fuel tank is easy to install once the driveshaft is removed. Got some work to do still, lots of it. Clutch is good after bleed, feels great. Brakes don't feel strong but they stop. Need to do a full change of transmission and axle fluids. Now the fuel sender isn't working. Rats. Then start on the paint work.
WesD Posted March 31, 2020 Author Posted March 31, 2020 Tested out the 4WD today. Broke off the shift arm on the vacuum servo. Transfer case will shift from 4H->N->4L and back, but never into 2H. Confirmed linkage is good, and the detent is good for 2H. Will change the oil tomorrow and give it another shot (NP 231). Figured out nothing is working, no lights, or blower motor. They all worked before. I checked the grounds under the hood and the dash, looked ok. Thoughts?

Nothing works except the engine. It all worked fine before I removed the dash, and the bulkhead connector. Dadgummit.
1987 com 4X Posted March 31, 2020 Posted March 31, 2020 Hey! Don't know how far you are along, but i have a body in my yard and also know of a great used jeep shop in Phoenix, az..
WesD Posted October 15, 2021 Author Posted October 15, 2021 Long time since update. Traced the wiring issue down to a pin inside the bulkhead connector. I documented the fix for this inside another thread. Ford parts worked correctly to get the bulkhead connector all going again. Truck has been sitting outside for the past year due to lack of interest. In meantime got a full bench seat with headrests. She's gone today....hopefully when I get it back it will look as it did in 1988.
WesD Posted October 15, 2021 Author Posted October 15, 2021 Temporarily gone. Gone to the body shop that is. Time for a transformation. I was hoping to learn to do body work and paint it myself but that's just not going to happen right now.
Pete M Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 sometimes some things are better left to the pros, even if it's purely for our sanity or timeline.
WesD Posted November 23, 2022 Author Posted November 23, 2022 And it's finally back. Have to finish putting on the body trim and putting in the interior trim. Dad and mom got to see their Comanche looking better than new. I paid more for the body work than it cost new in 88.
acfortier Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 Looks great! Except for the upside down grille
Pete M Posted November 28, 2022 Posted November 28, 2022 awesome! do make sure it's properly insured.
WesD Posted November 29, 2022 Author Posted November 29, 2022 Pete, Hard to believe that's the same bed you and I pulled that summer day. Shop gave me hell about finding a better one, then made it look new again. Grill is fixed! Gotta find some black headlamp buckets now.
