Trans swap

My 89 Comanche has the 4.0 renix . The truck is two wheel drive I want to take trans and transfer from 98 grand Cherokee to do the 4 wheel conversation. What do I need from the grand to complete this process

Don’t do it from the grand Cherokee.  They came with crappy 42RE.  grab the AW4 from cherokees instead

Really? I didn't think the Grand Cherokee ever came with a 231 transfer case.

 

I agree with Mean Lemons on the tranny. Aside from the 42RE being a POS, it won't be compatible with your chassis harness or TCU. You really should go with an AW4. (IMHO)

My ZJ has a factory 231. I'm pretty sure it was the base model tcase behind the automatic as well, at least while they were still building base models, but there definitely aren't many out there. But either way it doesn't mean it hasn't been swapped out at some point. 

But I wouldn't use a 42re either.

I checked the round tag on transfer and it said 231

Okay, it's a 231.

Just get the parts from an XJ. 

 

This is one of those situations where free stuff or stuff you have laying around is not a cost effective route in time, money, or both.
