has anyone else cut the catalytic converter out of their exhaust? Is that pretty straight forward?

Mine came without a catalytic converter.   I had to put one back on to have it certified so I could transfer the ownership.   It's the opposite to what you want to do but that was pretty straight forward.

Straight forward.  Cut at each end.  Weld a replacement pipe to fill the gap.  You may have to do this yourself, as shops will likely refuse.  But first, check your laws and assess your legal risks--some local and state laws may inspect for registrations, transfers or emissions, etc.

I bought my MJ from a guy in Southern Illinois and the CAT was already removed.   I had no issue with transfer and licensing/registration here in Southern Indiana.  There's no testing or inspection here.

BTW, go ahead and expect chastising from some for even asking that here.  Ha!

Here in Texas All Mj's are exempt (25 years and older vehicles). However you can get some inspectors who will look. Troopers if are trying to get something on you, will look and ticket. Since federal law requires you to have them, and all states have to meet federal. Easy way is to hollo out and re-bolt back on. Once they get old that is what we do.

I didn't even know it was a federal law.  There are a lot of people around where I live who have removed them - I thought the requirement had something to do with the age of the vehicle.  From what I understand the cat doesn't really do a lot for the environment, as it reduces power and fuel economy and you lose what you gain, environmentally, in increased fuel usage.  Eitherway, I'll look into the laws before I do anything.  From what I just googled there are a lot of exemptions to the law.

Is the reason you keep the Renix intake just to keep the EGR?  Would it matter about using the new intake if you're deleting the EGR?

No. To keep everything else. Throttle body etc.

So, just as an update, we got the old engine out today.  I took the valve cover from the old engine because it is aluminum, and I'm in the process of cleaning it and shining it and then I'm putting some high temp lacquer on it to preserve the shine.  Tomorrow will be moving some parts over from the old engine to the new engine and hopefully getting it back in the truck, then Saturday will be going over all the connections and reassembling and hopefully my first phase of break-in.

Does anybody have any experience with using ZDDP additive during break-in?  I break-in with 50 - 100 miles with plain SAE 30 (and additive), then oil change, then 250 miles, then oil change, then 1000 miles then oil change and engine is 100% broken in - do I need to use that ZDDP additive during phase 2 and 3 of the break-in?

It's also available at OReily's, you may have to ask for it, by the quart.

And no, I'd not do as you describe, break-in oil for first EASY 500 miles then change.

So, I got everything hooked up and running, but I'm  having problems - I think with my injectors.  I had replaced my injectors with some after market ones right before the rebuild, hadn't really tested them.  Now, when I'm accelerating or decelerating I'm getting some roughness in the running and some backfires.  If I am maintaining a speed, I am fine.  Is this my injectors?
