I didn't know there was anything wrong with using platinum plugs - that's what I used for years before I put this engine in here... The distributor is new. I don't know what a leak down check is, but I'll read up on it. I won't know what the operating fuel pressure is or how to measure it, so I'll do some googling and youtubing and get back to you eventually. -
I'm posting a lot because I don't know very much, but y'all's answers have really been helping me. I'm trying to figure out why my truck is running so rough, now it is surging and bucking when I accelerate. Here is what I've done: 1. Rebuilt a '96 HO 4.0 I6 and replaced the existing '87 4.0 I6. 2. Deleted the EGR system 3. Changed up to a PCV open loop system. 4. Replaced the muffler and tail pipe. 5. After the muffler and tail pipe the truck briefly ran really good until the gas dropped down to about 1/8 a tank or a little less. 6. I thought it was the tank or the fuel pump, so we took the tank off and cleaned it out and replaced the pump. We ended up having to patch a small hole in the tank, anyway. This didn't fix the problem. I've checked the indexing of the distributor, new 2x platinum plugs, etc. Any ideas?

HELP! fuel injectors? distributor?
Katalyzt13 replied to Katalyzt13's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Man, Cruiser54 has been my hero through most of this process - thanks for the advice! -
I'm trying to figure out what is causing a fairly extreme symptom in my truck. I've just finished putting a rebuilt engine in there, but still have some issues. For the record, I had been driving my truck with bad rings and other engine problems for quite a while before putting a new engine in, so I assumed a lot of symptoms were related. I had to put new injectors in my truck before the rebuild and had put some of those cheap plastic bodied injectors in there before. Now, my truck seems to have problems with acceleration and deceleration. It runs really rough when accelerating or decelerating, it has backfired a few times when decelerating but it runs fine when I'm maintaining a speed. My working theory is that it is either the injectors or else I need to replace my distributor. Does anybody have any experience or info that would help me?

So, I got everything hooked up and running, but I'm having problems - I think with my injectors. I had replaced my injectors with some after market ones right before the rebuild, hadn't really tested them. Now, when I'm accelerating or decelerating I'm getting some roughness in the running and some backfires. If I am maintaining a speed, I am fine. Is this my injectors? -

What are the vacuum hose diameters I would need to buy in order to replace all the vacuum hoses in a Jeep Comanche 1987?

So, it should have a line running to my intake?

So, just as an update, we got the old engine out today. I took the valve cover from the old engine because it is aluminum, and I'm in the process of cleaning it and shining it and then I'm putting some high temp lacquer on it to preserve the shine. Tomorrow will be moving some parts over from the old engine to the new engine and hopefully getting it back in the truck, then Saturday will be going over all the connections and reassembling and hopefully my first phase of break-in. Does anybody have any experience with using ZDDP additive during break-in? I break-in with 50 - 100 miles with plain SAE 30 (and additive), then oil change, then 250 miles, then oil change, then 1000 miles then oil change and engine is 100% broken in - do I need to use that ZDDP additive during phase 2 and 3 of the break-in? -

I didn't even know it was a federal law. There are a lot of people around where I live who have removed them - I thought the requirement had something to do with the age of the vehicle. From what I understand the cat doesn't really do a lot for the environment, as it reduces power and fuel economy and you lose what you gain, environmentally, in increased fuel usage. Eitherway, I'll look into the laws before I do anything. From what I just googled there are a lot of exemptions to the law. -

has anyone else cut the catalytic converter out of their exhaust? Is that pretty straight forward? -

Thanks, Jeep Driver. I just want to reiterate that the individual helping me is a machinist with a full shop who does this for a living and has been rebuilding engines for 40 years. He rebuilds engines on the side, his main job is fabricating robotic factory equipment and machines for large scale manufacturing. We have everything down to better than factory tolerances when the engine was manufactured. My reservations have nothing to do with the engine itself, but rather with the swap and making everything mesh well together when I'm done. -

Is the reason you keep the Renix intake just to keep the EGR? Would it matter about using the new intake if you're deleting the EGR? -

Yes, the milling machine was set up so everything was square and then the block was secured. Any issues I might encounter putting it into my '87 Pioneer? -

The machinist/mechanic I mentioned has fabricated tools for this in his machine shop. We used these tools in a large milling machine. One of the tools is to make sure you're perfectly centered in the cylinder, the other is adjustable and bores out the cylinder, I don't know how to explain how it works - it just slowly cuts out material to whatever measurement you set it for. -

My immediate answer would be to please refer to the thread title, i.e. "Clueless", but after that I would say I didn't send my block to anybody. I have a mechanic and machinist with something like 40 years rebuilding engines kind of directing me as I'm using a corner of his shop. He helped me bore and hone the cylinders and he didn't think anything else was needed with the block. I did send the head to a specialist, etc. What would be the benefit of having it decked? (For future reference)
