Omarmartinez33
I’m going to buy a 99 Cherokee ax15 and have the Tcase to go with it. I might get a 98 4.0 engine from a grand Cherokee. Can this work together putting it into my 86 Comanche. What issues will I run into and what extra stuff do I need to get. I know about the firewall and radiator support on one the links provided
87MJTIM
Someone else may comment, but I do not believe the bellhousing that bolts to the 4.0 will bolt to a 2.5. The bolt patterns are different. You may have to search for a Dakota bellhousing. Do some searching for the years that match.
Omarmartinez33
Should I just get the same year engine with the ax15?
87MJTIM
You would need a 4.0 to match the AX15. Doesn’t matter which year.

87MJTIM
The AX15 will bolt to any Jeep 4.0. One issue you may have the pilot bearing/bushing for the trans input shaft. Early years trans have a smaller tip than later years tip.

Pete M
nope. just needs to have a 23 spline input to match the output of the AX-

No I’m saying does the engine have to be manual specific because some engines were used for automatic while mine is going to be a Manual
yxmj
No....that would not be the concern.....with a 4.0 out of a ZJ.....if my memory is right....you need to make sure the attachment holes for the motor mounts are in the correct position and that it has all the other mounting points for necessary brackets to mount your accessories...... Some holes are not there in some cases.....

75sv1
The 96-01 4.0L out of an XJ should have the same crankshaft. So, the pilot hole should be the same. OK, not sure on the 01, as it had a NV3550. You could look at Advanced Adapters. The WJ's 99-04 Grands, are a real challenge. I'm still struggling with that project. I'd avoid it. I would guess 91-95 HOs would be a match too. Still, Id check about the pilot bearing.
