I’m going to buy a 99 Cherokee ax15 and have the Tcase to go with it. I might get a 98 4.0 engine from a grand Cherokee. Can this work together putting it into my 86 Comanche. What issues will I run into and what extra stuff do I need to get. I know about the firewall and radiator support on one the links provided

Someone else may comment, but I do not believe the bellhousing that bolts to the 4.0 will bolt to a 2.5.  The bolt patterns are different.

You may have to search for a Dakota bellhousing.  Do some searching for the years that match.

I don't understand that? You said the 99 got you a trans and a t-case to go with.....were does the auto come in?

No I’m saying does the engine have to be manual specific because some engines were used for automatic while mine is going to be a Manual

No....that would not be the concern.....with a 4.0 out of a ZJ.....if my memory is right....you need to make sure the attachment holes for the motor mounts are in the correct position and that it has all the other mounting points for necessary brackets to mount your accessories...... Some holes are not there in some cases.....

The ZJ ones are all the same.  Watch out for the WJ ones, they are not.  And 2000 was the changeover for TJ engines.

The 96-01 4.0L out of an XJ should have the same crankshaft. So, the pilot hole should be the same. OK, not sure on the 01, as it had a NV3550. You could look at Advanced Adapters. The WJ's 99-04 Grands, are a real challenge. I'm still struggling with that project. I'd avoid it. I would guess 91-95 HOs would be a match too. Still, Id check about the pilot bearing.
