I figured there aren’t too many days left in the year to cruise into work with a top less CJ. Ripped it around a bit before I got home too.

Here I thought we were having a nice time and then it just starts dumping fuel from the gas cap!

To recap, I didn’t think I was having this issue since I gutted the pressure relief from the cap and changed the vent line from the tank to just a filter venting to atmosphere.

On the tank, theres two vent lines as the factory intended. I’ve been using one as a fuel return since I did the fuel injection swap. I know… it’s not the right way to do it, but I also haven’t had any problems up until this year.

The blue arrow is the fuel return and the red goes to the filtered vent. An in tank fuel pump has been on my mind for years, but again this has only been a problem this year. :fistshake2:

Ugh… So there I was trying to better the Jeep by making an actual fuel return and slosh pan to get to the bottom of the fuel issues. I get on to cleaning out the fuel tank and I found not one, but FOUR SCREWS plugging holes and some hardened peanut butter looking junk slathered over a bunch of rust. Not just four screws, but not even the SAME four screws!!

I briefly debated patching the tank, but the more I cleaned the worse it got. Ah well… new tank is on order. I moved forward with using it to mock up the new pickup, return, and slosh pan.

My material scraps are REALLY getting down there! A new gasket is also on order, but I borrowed it and the  split ring from my auxiliary fuel tank from the Moab trip. The slosh pan sits on the bottom of the tank and has the return dump right into it while the new pickup location is towards the back. This should keep the pickup submerged all the time. I’m set should I decide to go with an in tank pump in the future.

Now the old fuel pickup and gauge sender is just a sender. The old pickup got cut off and will now just be a vent. I would imagine it might’ve had something to do with the issues, but the pickup screen was falling apart and could barely be seen through.

… and now we wait for parts to show up.

Is one of those screws a wood screw?

There is a drywall screw, a self tapping, machine screw, and a steel siding screw with the rubber washer for extra sealing strength. :shaking:
