Hudy Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 While under the MJ this week I noticed a fair amount of rust developing on both sides of the truck above the rear wheel wells (inside). I'm looking for a solution to remove the rust before it progresses and penetrates through the body. Is there a reliable chemical remover or am I stuck with mechanical removal? Aside from jamming a wire wheel up there, what options do I have (the area is tight). Thanks.
Pete M Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 what I would do is pull the bed off, mechanical as best I can, prep properly then coat with POR-15. while you've got the bed off, you can attend to the rest of the nastiness that is undoubtedly on your frame or gas tank etc.
Jeep Driver Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 Ospho, soak, let set overnight, rinse, THEN...................choose your poison. Ospho or similar will convert rust, not just choke it out.

Pete M Posted November 15, 2017 Posted November 15, 2017 oh, I know. they all start up there. it sucks big time. the rest looks pretty good though

You'd need to remove any coating/paint down to bare metal for the POR-15, correct me if I'm wrong...
Pete M Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 POR 15 needs the loose stuff to be removed and the surfaced to be chemically cleaned (aka remove any oilu residue), but you can definitely put it right on the rusty stuff.
DirtyComanche Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 You could probably snake a hose up there and sand/media blast that area. Oshpo is a muriatic acid converter. It will work good too, but it has limitations if the rust is too flaky and blocks it. You also want to get it rinsed out well. If you wire wheel it first, it would probably work great.
Hudy Posted November 16, 2017 Author Posted November 16, 2017 Its just a tough spot to get to on that shelf (and hopefully not beyond...). Plan of attack for now will be to wire wheel everything I can, squirt a converter on it, and do my best with painting it (I guess ill give POR15 a shot). Just surprised on this issue as I had rinsed that area religiously after salt exposure the past few years. Oh well... I Guess.
jdwillys Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 Hudy, I see that you are from Philly area. I live in South Jersey. I can help you out . I have a mobile sandblasting company. Let me know if you want me to blast away!
Jeep Driver Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 You'll likely find that the rot is behind the flare.......through the bed side, under that flare.
Jeep Driver Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 FWIW, wherever you have crevices/joints/seams........etc.........that you cannot reach, you'll load it up with sand that you cannot clean out.
jdwillys Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 With the bed on the frame, then yes difficult to reach equipment to all the spots, and unable to address all clean up and coating. Bed would have to come off frame for this to be done thoroughly with blasting. I don't know what Hudy's plan is. Just offering my help. And letting all CC members that I have this available. Thank you!
Pete M Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 if you've got a business, feel free to post up in the vendors section

Thank you! This is probably a good idea... I’m interested. I have plans to pull the bed in the spring for paint and will take you up on this offer then. For now to minimize the rot progression ill hit it with a converter and hope for the best.
