Quick upgraded oil filter nipple question...

Was wanting to replace my oil filter nipple with the non-metric nipple today.  Pulled the filter off to find a very long tube coming up from the old metric nipple.  I did get the Mopar 3/4X 16 SAE nipple earlier, so I was expecting a like-looking metric nipple.

 

Am I missing something here...should I be concerned about losing the elongated pipe nipple and going with the much shorter SAE nipple--especially since I plan on using the very-much-taller 6.93" WIX 51773 oil filter?  Check that sucker out below.

 

I'm off to buy a (very) deep well socket to get this sucker off now, I suppose.  I think I read somewhere the old one is a 22mm.

The adapter nipple replaces the existing pipe nipple.

EDIT:  Renix question: The 91 and up HO filter "lays down" horizontally and points to the rear so there is always a quantity of oil left in the filter when shutdown. The Renix filter is straight up, so in the case of a filter w/o an anti-drain valve or a leaky one, all the oil would drain out causing dry startups. Not good, si?

Cool, I kinda assumed this was the case, but was a bit concerned about the length of the old pipe nipple and its functional relationship with my much taller WIX 51173 oil filter.  

 

You horizontal filter guys probably can't fit the 51173 filter can you?  This sucker is massive!  Just did my first oil change.  To the fill mark, it took 7 quarts!

Both my 91 XJ and MJ have filters that point straight up.  I know this because I write the date/mileage on the bottom when I change my oil.  And, since I have replaced my A/C system with 96 style hoses that use a different routing, now they interfere slightly with the filter, so I plan to lay them horizontal next oil change.

 

Do we know if the change was a mid-year thing versus all HOs came that way?

The 6.93" filter size like the 51173 would fit but when changing the filter and sliding it off rearward it would come very close to the positive terminal on the starter. So I play it safe and have always used the 5.178" size like the Wix 51515.

My 91 also points the filter to the sky. Will probably change that once I do the 96 AC conversion. Super convenient to change, worthless as far as filling it up goes.

You're thinking that even as oil pressure begins as the engine starts, that the filter will not fill up completely?

I like to pre-fill my filters if possible. The 4.0 in my '91 takes a couple of seconds to show oil pressure after a filter change.

Works fine. Use Wix filters available at Napa and O'Reilly's. 

 

1085 standard.  1515 extra CAPACITY.

Best bet is to use a 7/8s wrench and use a pry bar against it. I'm a mechanic for a living and none of my sockets were long enough.

I found a long 22mm impact socket that worked well.  Definitely required a cheater bar.
