Swampy
Hey guys. My 88 manche has a manual steering box. It seems like a good option but once the lift and the bigger tires go on I don't think it'll be as desirable. My main questions is if I will be able to pull of this tensioner pulley and add the power steering pump on my 2.5l tbi. I know I also have to change the steering gear box and get a reservoir and the lines for the pump. Would Anyone also know how to replace the bolt in the steering column? I may have nicked the first few threads so now the nut doesn't go on properly.
Jeep Driver
Yes, you should have no problem adding a pump, and you don't need a separate reservoir, get a modern pump and use XJ lines. You'll need a pulley from a 87-90 MJ XJ, 2.5 or 4.0 should fit. Get a good clean DRY ZJ box........you'll be happy. Pull the steering wheel, use an angle grinder with cut-off wheel to cut the damaged portion of the steering shaft off............or, replace the entire column. carnuck
I forget the pitch, but a thread file tends to fix them or matching a wheel nut 2 piece thread fixer on it. You could take a matching nut and run it through a bandsaw. I had a set of split thread chasers that went away when I thought I was dying a couple years ago. I need to change my current PS pump (it’s WAAAY too much pressure for such small tires) I added about 10mm of spacers to move the later model pump forward to match the other pulleys on my 2.5L because the return hose had a rag or something in it to keep it from feeding oil to the pump from the remote reservoir by the rad. I had no pressure because oil didn’t get to the pump intake and the newer pump interferes with the air filter hose. DirtyComanche
On the threaded shaft in your steering column, you can probably just clean the first couple threads off with a fine file and it will be perfectly fine... Or get a thread file and clean them up more properly.
Jeep Driver
Maybe I'm looking at it wrong......... End of shaft looks distorted/bent/mushroomed. That's what I see.

That's what I see. I'm assuming it's from doing something wrong with the puller or the up'n'down wrench. Filing some threads off, or a thread file, can fix either if you know how... carnuck
Filing diameter smaller to re-thread is another option. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Eagle
Try the thread file first -- or a thread restorer die.

Wait a year or so, you might see supercharged and injected V8 tucked away in there. :)
