Airborne Janitor
Recently purchased an 89 longbed MJ as a project. Whoever owned it previously tried to turn it into some type of budget wheeling/mud truck I believe. It looks like they converted it over to the open cooling system since it has a radiator w/ a cap and a coolant overflow bottle from a later model XJ. Anyways, I started peaking around the motor and found a few unplugged/open vacuum and electric plugs that I need help identifying: Appreciate the help! onlyinajeep726
^^ Both of the ports that are "U-ed" together, go to your heater core, right behind where that overflow bottle goes. ^^ This is for your hood light, which is not there and in many cases were not even installed from factory unless it was added on. ^^ This vacuum hose goes to the heater control valve, which is not there because your heater hoses are not there (the part that is "U-ed" together) ^^ This is part of the EGR purge system. Not particularly worrisome unless the locale in which you live requires it for inspection, assuming inspections are applicable in your area. ^^ This plug goes to the temperature switch that activates the auxiliary/electric radiator fan, when/if equipped. The switch usually screws into the radiator and comes into direct contact with coolant. Once the coolant reaches around ~220-225 degrees F, it switches on and activates the fan relay, which in turn, powers the fan.
ParadiseMJ
Well, someone had some fun under the hood here. I'd find out if the heater core is clogged (just run a garden hose through it) or leaking. That would be a good reason to "U" the hose from the t-stat to the water pump. Or...when they converted it from closed to open system they just didn't want to deal with the heater hoses. If it was me, I'd remove the bracket for the old pressure bottle and find a different overflow bottle to fit in that spot (then you wouldn't need a bungee to hold it in place. The reason for the EGR solenoid being plugged would be because you have an aftermarket air filter (cone) which does not include a port for the EGR itself, the transducer or the EGR solenoid. All plugged. The mishmash of vacuum lines, plugged and possibly leaking or mis-routed may be an issue in how the truck drives and the fact that you have no working heater. Don't know about smogging or inspection but if those apply, In CA, they'd open the hood and fail you right off. Again, if it were me, I'd first explore the heater situation. Cost would involve possibly a heater core, two proper hoses (you don't really need a heater valve) and some hose clamps. Then I'd go buy some bulk vacuum hose and go through my vacuum system. If you find leaks, replace the hose(s), don't just tape them up.

Airborne Janitor
Thanks for the replies everyone! fiatslug87 your post/pictures were very helpful. Apparently the previous owner tore out all the EGR related items, including the EGR valve: Took a look at the heater core, which I assume is not working: So I have some items to replace in the near future, in addition to vacuum lines/hoses/harnesses. I made a diagram to what I believe to be accurate for what I will need to replace: Also, the plug on the driverside fender near the header panel is not for the electrical fan as you can see that one is plugged in:
DirtyComanche
Do you need the EGR? I wouldn't reinstall it. Or the stock airbox or anything to do with it. HO models didn't even have EGR. And the stock airbox is kinda just a big piece of junk, IMHO, but that's subjective. Late model XJs have nice premolded hoses for the heater. You don't need the valve, they didn't have one. I'd be more concerned about the lack of a battery holddown than anything else I see so far...

It is for the temperature switch for the aux. fan. I went out and looked at mine yesterday and forgot to come back to this thread to edit my initial reply.
