Big Dangus
So here is situation, I have just removed the 4 cylinder from my 86 MJ and replaced it with a sbc V8. After a multitude of problems from the drive train, bell housings, the clutch and a lot more i have finally progressed to turning the engine. However I discovered that the stock radiator will not support the the engine driven fan due to a clearance issue. It seems that the 4 bangers radiator was smaller and placed 4 inches aft than what the in line 6 was, so what i would like to try is find a MJ/XJ with the straight 6 radiator mounting brackets and try to install. Am i wasting of my time or does any one have any suggestions?
Jtrux
Just a thought...If you are mechanically inclined enough to swap a Chevrolet engine into your Jeep, I think you can probably come up with a decent solution to your problem. Not trying to be rude, but just sayin'.
onlyinajeep726
Not speaking from personal experience, but from all the research I've done when I was thinking of going V8 swap, I concluded that the stock 4.0L radiator is not sufficient to keep a V8 cool. With that said, I would NOT recommend that. You could adapt a V8 ZJ radiator. I've seen that done.
Big Dangus
I do not want to reuse the 4 cylinders radiator but it needs at a minimum the straight's 6 size radiator, guess my main question was will the bracketry fit with out major fabrication? I got a lead from Novak conversions that on a electric fan and radiator setup just need it to fit.
kansashogan
I have a 350 in mine and I bought the Novak radiator. I live in Kansas and it keeps it cool just fine. Expensive, but I don't regret buying it.
Tj1
I thought the 350 radiator had different inlet locations and sat further down than 4.0s...? from the things ive read online at least
mnkyboy
86 does not have the provisions to put in the 4.0l radiator, you would probably need to cut the parts out of an 87 up MJ/XJ to weld into yours then run the 87 up hood. The 4.0l radiator barely keeps the 4.0l cool,i wouldnt want to try to cool a V8 with it. I run a 4.0l radiator with my built 2.5l,it works pretty good cooling the 2.5l,better than it does a stock 4.0l.
