ParadiseMJ
Hi folks, I want to replace the top two reverse torx bolts on my AW4. I took them out...long story...and I think I tossed them in absolute disgust. Can anyone help me out with the size of those bolts?
Pete M
I wanna say they are 3/8", but am not sure of the length. I suggest grade 8 studs rather than bolts. then you can use them as guide pins
ParadiseMJ
You may have something there. IIRC they were a tad +/- 2" (that's how precise I am). So SAE...not metric?
Pete M
pretty sure all the bellhousing bolts are standard
Minuit
As a general rule, things going into the engine block are standard thread and head. For example, the very common "11mm oil pan bolt" myth - they're actually 7/16".

87MJTIM
The white box at the top of the picture has the upper and lower bolts reversed.
gogmorgo
Are they though? The smaller bolts are the top two engine-bellhousing bolts, thus the upper bolts.
87MJTIM
Are they though? The smaller bolts are the top two engine-bellhousing bolts, thus the upper bolts. You are correct - on the engine... but in the picture, the bolts are backwards.
gogmorgo
Could be confusing I suppose. But upper and lower makes more sense to be referring to the engine, not the photo. Especially since they have them labelled in the photo with the part numbers.
ParadiseMJ
Thanks guys. I'd say the bolts are labeled correctly...one is the lower...because it's lower, on the tranny. One is the upper, because it's further up, on the tranny. Anyway, thank you for the info and the ideas. Great forum, just great.
ParadiseMJ
Thanks again guys. I stopped in to my local ACE hardware and picked up the bolts. Perfect fit, added a lock washer. Good to go now. BTW...yes, grade 8.
Minuit
Nah, you need grade 2. Gotta let the transmission stretch and get comfortable. :fs1:
