Axeminister
Hey guys, went in to a gas station to get a coke and come out and she won't start. All lights and buzzing comes on but does not even try to turn over..... This happened a few weeks ago but it was just a screwy wire going to the starter relay, cleaned off the corrosion and boom, she fired right up. This time no such luck.....i have already replaced the relay and hooked it up exactly how it was on the old one and checked every fuse on the box with a meter. I got it push started and its home but she is dead in my driveway. The next thing I'm doing is taking the starter off and getting it tested. Does anyone have an alternative idea or experienced this before?
mikekaz1
Bad engine ground?
Eagle
Most likely the starter. They do wear out.
ScottJeep
Just my experience once. Replaced battery, starter and checked over TONS of other stuff. Ended up being a battery cable that when finally removed don't know how it ever worked. BUT, you could not see it until you completely removed the cable. johnj92131
Ignition switch? It was years ago that I had to replace the ignitions switch on the Comanche - no longer remember why it had to be done. But do your lights dim when you try to start the car?
Axeminister
my plan is to take the starter off tomorrow and get it tested, then consider ignition switches and such if that is a dead end. i roll started it so as for the engine ground being bad...would the engine not start if it wasnt grounded? gogmorgo
If it's an automatic, my money's on the neutral safety switch. Could likely do with a good cleaning. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neutral-safety-switch-nss/
Eagle
I don't think you can roll start an automatic.
64 Cheyenne
Don't forget to check the neutral safety switch, under dash, connected to clutch pedal.
Eagle
Don't forget to check the neutral safety switch, under dash, connected to clutch pedal. Most MJs with a manual transmission don't have this. Jeep didn't start using it until a couple of years after Chrysler took over.

Thats funny, all this time I was just assuming that it didn't work... :rotf:
scguy
I'd recommend investing in a volt meter. You can throw parts at it, or you can save time and money by diagnosing it properly
1989 comanche mj
Sit there with the key turned to start for a bit, then feel the battery cable. If its warm the cable could be bad or a bad ground. Use jumper cables to do a good ground from battery to engine. Jump the starter solenoid with a screwdriver to see if that gets it to start, if so it could be the ignition switch. Turn on your headlights and see if they are good and bright, or check voltate at the battery. Check voltage at the battery while someone turns the key to run, if it drops a lot it could be the battery or cables. Hit the starter with a hammer a few times. A bad engine ground could keep the starter from working but be adequate for the ignition. I had a cherokee that had a bad alternator and wouldn't run.
