Absolutely.Can you hear it run?

no, but they bought it to take the trans and lift off of it. also it may or may not be stroked, the current owner doesn't know it's just what he was told by the guy he bought it from.

if there was an easy to check i'd like to know. :)

I don't know if you think this is easy but......since it is out of the truck....pull off the pan and find the casting number on the crank (usually around cylinder 4) if the crank has 4 counterweights and the casting number ends in 3727...it is a 4.2 crank  :dunno:

Pulling the pan would also give you a good general idea of the engines condition.  Being a used engine there is always a gamble involved.  For what it's worth, $200 is a bit cheaper than what they charge at my local yard for an engine in unknown condition.  At the very least, being able to turn the crank by hand is a start.

It is out and on a stand. Ill see if they'll let me take it apart to look at it anything else?

Also @ impulse rocket at least you're yard has xjs i think there might be two right now in the pnp.

Edit if it really is a stroker it should have upgraded injecters right? Any way to tell those apart from stock one? I'm just looking for the most ways to check.

Would not have to have upgraded injectors....it could have all other components stock but it would need to have a 4.2 crank (or aftermarket) to be considered a stroker....

Check the crank casting number!  It is the ONLY way to be sure.  Or buy a 258 engine - even then you have to check the crank to be sure it is a 258 and not a 232 or 199.

Check the crank!

For $200 bucks....? if you can't do a compression test, do a leakdown and look for consistent leakage across the cylinders.

FWIW my 88 is on its 2nd motor since I've had it, pretty sure it has +200 K mi on it, doesn't smoke, uses a little oil, that motor won't die

regularly wrap it to 3 to 4.5 K rpm, and has had piston slap since I put it in...runs fine for me, aint changin it unless it starts smoking or blows up

These motors are so durable and durn near last forever.
