XJ Speaker Bar/Integrated Speaker Bar in MJ?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I tried searching, I know I've seen this done and I think it was by one of you guys on here. I basically want to use an XJ speaker bar in my MJ, this would gain me a center dome light and speakers back in since I run doorless now. I will have an extra external speaker bar soon (like the 96- XJs had) so I could go that route. What I would really like to do is more or less just chop the back half of a 97+ headliner that has the molded in speakers in it, and put that in an MJ. Now, obviously XJs and MJs are the same width. But...does anyone see any problems with this?

i THINK jeepco has either done it, or knows someone who has... don't know though its been a while since i've seen the thread

good memory!

yep, we did it. the older style fits the contour of your truck very well with minimal trimming, and the bracket that holds the center of it up just glues to the metal behind your headliner. you can position it as needed, and then you only need to recover the sound bar to match your headliner.

you can sorta see it here.

that also shows the sub box we built and the holes he was originally gonna put the OHC speakers in...til i brought up this idea.

this is what we ended up doing...he wanted the OHC and didn't need the rear dome light.

still not done...he doesn't know how to fiberglass and until he's willing to sit down and learn, i'm not teaching him.

Hijack:

Tell me more about this sound bar. I've never seen one. OEM? Aftermarket? Where do I look for one?

I believe they started putting them in Cherokees as early as 1994 as an option. Then I believe in 1998 they started integrating them into the headliner, which is a really cool look. I can take some pics of my 1999 later on today and show you what I mean. Jeepco, good to see that it worked for you, that means I could for sure use the external one, what do you think about the integrated type though? Have you seen them before?

I've seen them and it's gonna be more trouble than it's worth...you would have to cut your headliner in the middle, install the speaker integrated thing, and fiberglass the headliner back together...the xj one won't fit the window/rear curvature of the comanche, and it's just not the rignt contours on the front edge.

easiest is the speakerbar, and for the trouble, you can cut the speakerbar up like we did and position the speakers as desired, then fiberglass the hole thing and not have to mess ONCE with reforming the main backboard.

Fair enough, that's what I will do then. b*@$£ of it is though, I just had my MJs headliner recovered, so I don't really want to fiberglass over it, but I will just put the older style bar up for a while and see how I like it. Thanks Jeepco.

I tried it in my 1999mj project and the speaker was laying right on my head
Mine will be going into my comanche, but it will be a good 2+ feet behind my head. Nice little cab extension thanks to a wrecked 98 XJ. The trim will be complete inside of it too. It's pretty nice too, because the XJ came with some nice monster cable and stuff that I salvaged. I'll get a little more in depth in the build thread.

@90PioSport99 when you installed that OHC did you plug in the harness or just run a positive and ground?

I have the OHC and temp sensor from my old XJ, just trying to see if it would easier to get a harness or not.

This is a 12 year old thread.........the dude is long gone.

Jeep Driver is right.  Sold me my blue MJ and a bunch of parts.  Last I heard he was getting rid of pretty much all of his Jeeps and parts.

Well I saw he had been posting until a few years ago so was hoping he just became a lurker haha,

Oh well, maybe someone else will see this and know if the harness is plug and play or not.
