Incommando Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I am looking to swap in a tilt column as I swap in buckets, a console, and floor shifter. Can someone tell me what years of XJ tilt column would work in my '91? If it is just the key/ignition switch that is different having different door & ignition keys doosen't bother me as us old dudes were used to having two keys, anyway. Thanks
cruiser54 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I would say any column from an XJ or Mj up until Chrysler started using their own columns.
Comangi Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I've got a '97 column in my '86. Don't know if that helps.
mnkyboy Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I don't think they changed till 94,my 89 column hooked right up to my 91 harness.
Eagle Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I've got a '97 column in my '86. Don't know if that helps. What did you do about the air bag?
Rockfrog Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I have a 92 XJ auto tilt column in my 88 5spd ... Only issue I had was they switched orientation of the in switch, basicly just flipped it over (course it took me a bit to realize that bit). Otherwise it was plug and play. Many of my electronic components are 91-93, so I would agree the 94 year may be the change over year there.
Incommando Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 Yeah. I have a 91 column shift. I need some floor repair ( Yea Ohio) so I am switching to buckets and a console at the same time. I just found a '94 XJ floor shift column with tilt CHEAP and it doesn't even wobble. It is similar and has the old-style wheel '94 column:
HOrnbrod Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I'd like to do this too, put in an AW4 floor shifter but keep my existing column shift (just pull the shift arm and bypass the interlock) so I'll be watching. Your project would make a good writeup for the DIY forum........

Incommando Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 I just found some info that 91-94 should be the same with 95 being the change-over year. Two different sources. So maybe I got lucky on a $10 column. Per Rock auto 91-94 use the same ignition switch/cylinder & starter switches ( big one on the coulumn) so that is promising
Incommando Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 I am going to go pick up that '94. I will let you know if it works.
dunnc1991 Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Interested as well, planning to throw a 93 tilt column in my 91. Haven't messed with it at all yet.
Incommando Posted May 2, 2015 Author Posted May 2, 2015 The '94 column is identical to the '91 column from what I can see with the one still in the truck. I am not sure about the changeover to a renix but with what I have found out today I think it is safe to say that at least the '91-'94 columns interchange. When I get the thing installed will post up. It will be a bit as I am replacing the floors, putting in XJ buckets and console, an RADesigns rock & rail shifter combo, and the column. Thanks for all of the help.
Rockfrog Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 The issue isn't the column, it's the wiring in it, they were still Saginaw columns. But there were plug and wiring layout changes at some point before the Chrysler column was introduced. That's where the main issues lie. The Renix ign switch is essentially the same as the later HO switch, it just seems Chrysler decided to flip it on its head in 91 for whatever reason. The plugs were the same just swapped and flipped. So if the 94 uses the same switch as a 92, then it's compatible with a Renix. Other than the lock cylinder using a double sided key, and the aforementioned plug flip .... My 88 column was fully compatible back and forth with the 92 column. As stated previously I have had a 92 column in my 88 for some time now.
