Incommando
That is so true of many modern engines it seems. Neglected oil changes ruin them. Oh for the good old days of running it 2 quarts low for 10,000 miles with no issue....
HOrnbrod
Yea, dirty blanking, blanking motor did it again NOT amused  The thing I'm curious about is why did it happen again?
banshee
My oil is changed no almost, not about but every 5000 miles, couple months ago I thought of a fluke, did it again last week? Hum I so want my 4.0L back
xjrev10
The 99-04 4.0s are getting a very bad rap in WJs.
Tommy
My understanding is that the 00 head redesign is garbage.
Minuit
The 99-04 4.0s are getting a very bad rap in WJs. Â Anecdote: A pretty big number of the 4.0 WJs I see around are making some pretty terrible internal noises.
87Warrior
The 99-04 4.0s are getting a very bad rap in WJs. What rap is that? Â You would have to pay me to own a 05/06 4.0. No thanks!

Go look on Craigslist. It can't just be up here. Seems every other 4.0 or 4.7 WJ is blown up.....
Incommando
The revised 4.0 in WJ's, TJ's, and later XJ's do not have the longevity that the early models had. I know they changed the head for '99 but did they change anything else?
shelbyluvv
They changed the oil pump drive assembly on the 04+ 4.0s. They are known for failing and taking out the bottom end of the engine.
Incommando
That would explain it
87Warrior
Good, so no typical failures in the 99+ 4.0 that I haven't been made aware of. The 4.0 in my 03 TJ is by far the quietest, smoothest running 4.0 I have ever been around. I've put 110k miles on the rebuild so far and it continues to impress me. (PO hydrolocked it and sent two rods through the oil pan at 12k miles...)
Incommando
So many 4.0's get hydrolocked.
