Keyav8r Posted February 7, 2015 Share Posted February 7, 2015 Is anyone daily driving a Ram pick-up? I'm looking at a 2014 Quad Cab, hemi, 8 speed auto to replace my 2005 Silverado with 240K miles. How long have you driven it? Good truck (why) or bad truck (why)? Any major issues and/or minor irritations? Yes, I know it's a Chrysler product, but so is my 91 Eliminator. I drive my truck for business use between 50 and 250 miles per day, depending on whether I'm commuting to the office or calling on customers. WiscoXJ Posted February 7, 2015 Share Posted February 7, 2015 in all honesty dodge hasn't fixed the rust issues.. so expect that within the first few years. otherwise I rather buy one of those before I bought a gasser chevy or ford. MJRemi Posted February 7, 2015 Share Posted February 7, 2015 I have a 2013 with the 3.6 Pentastar motor. I bought it for better gas mileage for trips from San Diego to Washington state. It doesn't have the throaty sound of the hemi but it has close to 300 hp and I have no complaints. I drove 1300 miles with at least 1000lbs in the bed and didn't even feel it. johnj92131 Posted February 7, 2015 Share Posted February 7, 2015 So what mpg did you get on the last trip with 1000 lbs in the bed? I think we call all "assume" you averaged 75 mph for most of the trip in Interstate 5. Last week coming back from Las Vegas in the Comanche, I averaged about 18.6 mpg. Average speed was 75+ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dasbulliwagen Posted February 8, 2015 Share Posted February 8, 2015 I'm a dealer tech and we have seen few if any issues with the gas powered trucks. The eight speed really makes the truck feel like its half the weight it is. The hemi will have cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing. Blue XJ Posted February 8, 2015 Share Posted February 8, 2015 I have a 2011 quad cab with a Hemi. Over 40k miles, my average MPG is 13.5, I do 90% city driving. Last summer I towed my travel trailer a lot, it's about 6200 pounds with about 900 being tongue weight, the truck handled it great, nice and stable. No real complaints other than the transmission calibration really sucks (5 speed) and a slight shutter when MDS kicks in. I do wish I bought a crew cab though, our car seat (rear facing) has to go in the middle to fit, its a bit of an inconvenience. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
xjrev10 Posted February 8, 2015 Share Posted February 8, 2015 Jeep club member has a '14 EcoDiesel and absolutely loves it. 28mpg. He pulls 10k with it frequently for farm work also. I think he's got around 15k miles on it with zero issues to date. Â Just re read and see you where asking about a Hemi truck. Sorry, carry on... Keyav8r Posted February 8, 2015 Author Share Posted February 8, 2015 Thanks, guys. About the only issue I had when I test drove the truck was lack of lumbar support in the seats. I've got a quite a few miles on my old body and comfort rates pretty high on my selection criteria. I think I can throw in a lumbar support cushion and solve that problem. Also found a site with aftermarket powered lumbar supports that can be installed in the seatback. The biggest impression I had was the power of the hemi and smmothness of the 8 speed auto. Looked at a loaded '15 GMC 1500 4WD but it's too nice a truck to run through quarries, cement and steel mills, and lime plants four or five days a week. I spent some time on the RAM forum reading multiple posts about this issue, there was one member who made a video about it and the noise was truly horrible when he would try to engage 4HI. Keyav8r Posted February 13, 2015 Author Share Posted February 13, 2015 Bought the Ram. 2WD, Hemi, 8 speed auto, 20K miles. The 8 speed does make the truck feel light and it shifts smooth as silk. So far the mileage figure on the dash has been reading between 18 - 21 MPG in mixed driving. The trip meters record average mileage per trip. One was around 5K miles at 19.1 MPG and the other was around 3K mikes at 19.2. Filled it up last night and will be checking the mileage the "old fashioned" way to see how close the real world is to the mileage meter. I believe the mileage is going to be better than my old 05 Silverado and the Ram's a blast to drive. Just gotta keep my foot out light on the pedal. cgl61 Posted February 15, 2015 Share Posted February 15, 2015 I have 2014 Crew Cab Laramie, Hemi, 8 speed - INCREDIBLE transmission. The truck isn't even broke in yet (6000 mile) and we ran it across PA on I80 for the weekend. Averaged 79 MPH and 18.9 MPG. I've made shorter slower runs and show 21 MPG. I've had multiple Ram Hemi trucks and this one is the best, smoothest and most comfortable riding I've owned. They just keep getting better each year. I've owned GMC, Ford, Chevy and a Tundra and wouldn't have any other than the Ram. If you are after mileage and aren't really hauling a heavy trailer, the new Pentastar would be the answer.
