Did my no-A/C MJ ever have an aux. fan?

Howdy gang and thanks for reading!
I should preface this by saying that my MJ is an '88 4L ba10/5 2WD that never had A/C installed on it. Where the compressor should be there no accessory, just a simple pulley and bracket.
I've been replacing all the missing and broken parts on my MJ (as we all do) and I recently went to install an auxiliary fan and simply could not find the connector on the harness. I double checked on other similar-year Jeeps and they all had the connector at the same spot in the harness- by the driver's headlight main connector under the airbox.

 

These leads me to wonder if I ever had an aux. fan to begin with. 

I thought all Renix harnesses were the same, with the unused connectors just hanging around.

hmm 2 different answers...
Canadian market maybe didnt have the fan?
Maybe 4x4 had the fan because they expect you to go offroad?
The mystery deepens...

If you had HD cooling but no A/C the truck would have had the aux electric fan.  Retrofitting one is fairly straightforward...I did it to Maura. There's a write-up here somewhere but basically the only difference between A/C and non-A/C wiring is the use of a diode so the "on" signal can't be back fed.

In 1988 the auxiliary fan could be provided as part of:

• Air conditioning
• Off-Road Package
• Heavy duty cooling package
• Trailer towing prep package]

It was not standard on all vehicles.

My '88 4.0/auto with no a/c but the factory tow package had the aux fan. I assume it was original but can't prove it. A lot of things get changed in 25 years. My '91 4.0/auto without a/c does not have the aux fan. When I added one I found the plug under the air box. I think it was Hornbrod who told me it was under there.

The aux fan also needs a relay, which you will probably have to add if the truck didn't have the fan from the factory.

I have a 88 auto 4.0 4x4 from Canada. I know its from canada cause my speedo is in KPH and temp is listed in celcius. To top it off I also have a factory block warmer. It has NO A/c and It did not have a Aux fan. I hooked up one myself. Really needed it to keep them Mj cool here in Texas. I just got a aux fan wiring kit and wired up.

Easy way might be to find a JY fan and install it and for control add a manual toggle switch in the cab, that controls a relay under the hood.

 

1) Put power to the fan so you can get it turning the right way and find the Pos+ and Neg-....Ground the Neg- to the chassis.

2) Run Pos+ from fan to terminal 87 on your relay run a direct Pos+ from Battery to terminal 30/51 ( an in-line fuse is suggested)

3) Run a line from Terminal #86 into the cab to one side of a toggle switch.....run the other side of the toggle to your fuse panel and plug in to an accessory (only on when the key is on).

 

Now you will have an accessory fan that you can turn on when ever you want, but you will have the piece of mind that it will go off when you turn off the ignition.

 

( if you what it to run automatically you can wire a temp sensor in as well and have the best of both worlds)

I think my 88 had a towing package or something because it had beefy rear drum brakes. I'm sure bigger than the ones on my '91, even though it was a Dana 35 axle. So my 88 may have had that fan due to a towing package or one of the other non-AC choices (off-road?). It was a truck sold out of BC, so not far from you, 8valve.

I want to add factory aux fan to my MJ for additional cooling in traffic. I'm not interested in wiring a switch in the cabin since the aux fan is controlled by A/C and the coolant temperature sensor (that should be good enough for what I want).

 

Since the connector is already there behind the driver headlight I'd like to just install the aux fan assembly. If I add a fuse and relay to the my fuse box (see below) will everything work as it should?

Yes it will.

 

One way to check that you are getting power and that you fan works is once you plug the fan in and install the fuse, jump the "top" and "bottom" pins (87 and 30?) for the relay with a small wire or paperclip and it should kick the fan on.

Yes it will.

 

One way to check that you are getting power and that you fan works is once you plug the fan in and install the fuse, jump the "top" and "bottom" pins for the relay with a small wire or paperclip and it should kick the fan on.
