jmaxj
I'm in the process of swapping the mj over to a AX 15 I've got the CJ-5 pilot bushing but what Clutch alignment tool do I need? The parts store lists 3 for an 87 Comanche.
hillbilly51
I'm pretty sure that it's a 1 1/8" diameter, 10 spline. The nose for the pilot bushing is 5/8" diameter. Hope this helps steve

87MJTIM
You need an .75" tip. Do the various tools list the ID of the bearing/bushing?
jmaxj
Yes they do. They all list a 5/8 tip 10 spline. Just have 4 different diameters.
87MJTIM
Sorry, I did not specify. The tip needs to be .75" wide, not depth.

You didn't say you had a new clutch. I've never got a new clutch kit that didn't have a tool....
jmaxj
Well this isn't a new clutch kit, it's just the new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel that was on the motor :)

jmaxj
Well did ya get it figured out?Not yet, the first two I ordered were wrong. And the other two seem to be taking longer to come in.http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUTO-CLUTCH-ALIGNMENT-ALIGN-DISC-PLATE-PILOT-TOOL-SET-8-BEARING-ADAPTORS-/171324746161?hash=item27e3c029b1&item=171324746161&pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtrThat's interesting. When I converted mine I just cut the input shaft off the old tranny and used that.....That's actually a good idea. JeepcoMJ
Only works if the old trans uses the same size pilot bushing.
hillbilly51
If the shafts that you are receiving fit the clutch disc but have too large a pilot end diameter and are made of plastic, you can reduce the OD with a bench grinder. I've done it before. Slowly rotate the shaft against the side of the stone and grind it down until you have the right size. Try it in increments...a little at a time until it fits. steve
jmaxj
Ok I finally solved the alignment tool problem. But now I'm having a pilot bushing problem. Anyone who's done this swap have the part number for the correct one. 3 of them I picked up for a CJ5 have a smaller diameter center hole. I'm about to just hone it out so I can get this jeep running
