Can You Guess This Axle!?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just bought an 88 Comanche Chief 4x4 LWB with the 92 Ho 4.0 in it. The previous owner put Dana 44's front and rear from something else. I have no idea what they are off of so I'm am looking for all of y'all's infinite knowledge. The only thing I know is that the rims came stock on the axles so that's all you have to work with. We'll here it is!

P.S. If I messed up the link let me know! Thanks guys!

Well I had an 07 wrangler that I made a crawler out of but everyone and their mothers had a jk and it just got old quick. I have always wanted a comanche since high school and I just like the rarity of them you only see one once in awhile and most of the time they are rusted through and are the ones at red lights with squeaky belts and brakes lol. Plus I wanted a truck so I got the best of both worlds!

You both win! Lol it is a dana 30 and they are American racing saw blade rims, well the seller pulled the wool over my eyes, now I gotta look for a d44. :(

thats a nice looking truck anyway. I personally would not worry about the D30 front unless you are planning on something radical. Lots of people wheel that axle with no problems. There is also alot of aftermarket support for the D30 to increase its strength.

Nice!...you got pics of your jk?

And I could imagine about the jk's alot of people here in miami have mall crawler jeeps....and all maxed out to the point that it's doesn't look right...

Why?

Unless you are going to run huge tires and you frequently get really crazy with the gas peddle, the dana 30 is all you'll need.

How about a photo of the rear axle? If the seller lied about the front, he may have lied about the rear as well.

The rear is definantly a 44 (based on the picture from yxmj) I was going to go with 35s but I really don't feel like forking all the money for a regear so I'm just going to stick with 33s. Tomorrow I'm going to see what my current gearing is and seal up a couple of holes in the firewall so it doesn't feel like a sprinkler system in my cab when it's raining lol

The jump from 33's to 35's actually only increases your ground clearance by 1" not two. Then there is the conventional wisdom that a HP D30 witht he big u-joints but otherwise stock will handle 33's but will struggle with 35's. A HP D30 with either internal or external trussing & chromo axles can handle 35'soff-road. So I guess you need to decide if the extra tire is worth the expense of upgrading based on what you want (looks only) and what you will actually do with your truck (functionality.) A mall crawler could probably handle 35's just fine stock but keep your new gearing issues in mind as well.
