Post Re-Gear Question

I have been having issues with the installation of my front gears. Apparently some pinion shims where left out causing the pinion gear to slide in and out. So i took it back and had that fixed.  But the past few days i have noticed the front end seems to be whining or a high pitch grinding sound (sorta like the sound my rear had before it exploded).  

 

Is this sound something that will go away during break in or does it need to be taken back again?

 

I hear it when i am at a steady speed above 40 and when i am accelerating.  I also use full time 4wd everywhere.  I can't remember if i heard this sound in 2wd.

I would take it to another shop and have them check it out. Your pinion bearing might be toast from the shimming issue you had. How long did you drive it before you got it fixed? Might even jack it up and pull the diff cover, to see/hear where its coming from.

The first time i took it back it had about 45 miles (15 miles with front drive shaft attached, in full time 4wd, and under 45 mph) currently i am at about 90 on the odometer.

 

I think the bad pinion setup whiped out your new gears.

 

I would have the shop pay to replace them with a new master install kit.

 

I plan to take it back to them tomorrow, if i get it back again and it is still whining, that will be my next action.

 

 

today if i still have daylight i will pull the front cover and get some pics of the ring gear with my Nikon.

While the botched install is a likely culprit especially if it more grinding than whining those gears are notorious for whining. They are cheaper for a reason and they include sets that did not meet the quality criteria to be sold under the Yukon brand. They are great for use in a front end with lock-outs so that they only turn when actually four wheeling but the noise complaints rack up quickly when they turn all of the time

If I paid a shop to install a gear set and i found them to have installed the carrier with out any preload when I went back if they did not bend over backwards to correct the issue and ensure there were no problems I would be stopping payment on the install and parts. If you provided the parts they may not care enough to fix the issue or could care less.

 

Small claims before they go under... But you will need another professional shop to state it was installed incorrectly and hopefully you have paperwork on the fact you went back in and they had to add shims to the carrier. In my home town my fathers best friend had his oil changed at a local oil shop, they forgot the oil plug. Needless to say they replaced the engine and it never went to court. Not a wives tail either.

In your second video @ 18sec. that looks like gear paint.  There is no way to set up gears even remotely close to right without using paint.

 

Did the shop replace the pinion bearings?  If not, they are probably not going to last too long.

 

IMO, the metal in the oil shown in the first pic is too much considering you have only driven 45 miles.

 

The drive side pattern (second photo) looks okay.  Its hard to tell in the third photo, but the coast side might have some weird stuff going on.  Is that wear on the inner most gear surface?  The coast surfaces as a whole look pretty rough/gouged but I have never seen USA Standard Gears up close.

 

A good gear setup needs both a good drive and coast pattern.

Go get some marking paint and check your pattern. It's pretty cheap.

I'm no gear expert by any means but as Timeless stated above they look pretty rough, and for only 45miles on the gears that does seem like alot of shavings considering based on your story this is the third time the pumpkins been opened and drained in that period. I'm assuming new fluid with each change?

Can you feel backlash? Based on the photos and the way it's wearing I'd be guessing the backlash is too tight, but then again it'd difficult to make any judgements because there's no marking paint and we're just looking at gear wear from 45 miles.

I called today, he said everything looked ok.  he said to being it back on a couple weeks to check on things. 
Tomorrow morning I am going to pick up the truck on my way into work.

 

I am still going to get some gear marking paint and check the setup when my D30 lube locker comes in...  I hate the DIY gasket stuff.

He checked the gears, bearings, races, and pattern. They all looked good according to him. this weekend i hopefully will have time to run a gear pattern and install the new lube locker gasket.

 

 

If it was me, based on past issues, I would insist on looking at the set up (pattern) before it was buttoned up.

 

by the time I had called he already finished putting everything back together.

I have USA standards in my 8.25 ... noisy ... sure but not whiny ... just some hum ... a bad ujoint was louder. My tires even more so ... my previous d30 was usa standard as well ... until I moved to an hp30 with G2 gears.

Even that was never whiny and even with street treads was still not loud, just noisier than stock.

Those gear look ground ... as is scored amd worn ... I have some pics of usa standards in my LP D30 I can toss up for comparison.
