Oil Filter Part Number

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I bought a mopar oil filter from the dealership for my '86 2.5 TBI Comanche, but after comparing it with the current one on there, I'm not sure it's the right one.

The partnumber on the box is: 05012968AA.

It's 0.5 inches wider and longer than the current NAPA filter, does that matter?

I hope someone can confirm it's the correct one, I'd hate to apply oil to it and then be unable to return it if it doesn't fit.

Pardon my inexperience, but the size of an oil filter can vary between makes(while being applicable to the same engine)? It looks like it could fit, it's just bigger. I won't find out until I change my oil next week, but I figured I could ask some more experienced members.

It either threads on or it doesn't, see if it does, then apply oil.

I use Pure1 14169.........IIRC

Not always. The metric filter will thread on to an SAE filter nipple. It will also UNthread itself down the road.............

Couple of years ago when I first got mine MJ I got one of the SAE filters and it did not thread on........later year 2.5 I think it was.

The issue was that the M20 filter WOULD thread on to the 3/4" nipple. The SAE filters would NOT thread on to the M20 nipple.

I ended my confusion by replacing the Renix era Oil Filter Adapter nipple with a block nipple from a 92 4.0L ... now I use the 3/4-16 filter. My 92 2.5L used the same 3/4-16 filter thread so its possible the swap can happen there as well. I just buy bulk ford FL1A's or Purolator PL30001's these days. Plus I can walk into a Walmart to find a filter if I had to ... couldn't do that for the metric filter.

That oil filter will not fit your 1986 2.5L. They gave you the wrong oil filter. The 1987 and up 2.5L uses a larger oil filter than the 1986 2.5L. I hope this info helps.

I do that on all My Renix Jeeps. The part number for the nipple is 53007563AB.

If you wanna snag one at the JY, be sure you have a 15/15" socket with ya.

Well, I figured it out. 1986 Comanche was spot on. It's just too big. Right now there's a NAPA 1040 GOLD(I should've looked at it before I asked, I'm sorry) on there, which after some googling I found out is M18 x 1.50 thread. No way this stupid Mopar filter wil fit.

I'll have to go back and get a different one.

Thank you for all your replies!.
