Upgrading Axles Need Help!

Recommended Posts

I have a D30 and D35 under her right now, with 3.55s. I'm going 33" tires up from my 31". i got a F150 8.8 sitting on the bench in the shop. i know their a little to wide for the MJ.  I'm thinking regearing the front D30 and swap the out the D35. how low can i go with the D30, will i need a carrier.  if i get a 8.8 out of an explorer how low can i go? same with D44 or 8.25. this is something i really don't have any know how in. i need options and ideas thanks guys

so a 8.8 doesnt need a carrier because there is no breaks but i D30 and D44 need a new carrier to go 4.10/4.56 because it has 3.55s and its on the other side, right?

Yes, that is correct.

I do have an 8.8 already setup with 4:56 gears for sale BTW. Little far of a drive for you though. :brows:

Spicer only made gears down to 4.56 for the Dana 30. There are aftermarket 4.88 gears available, but the pinion gear is so freakishly small there isn't w whole lot of engagement between the gears making it very weak. I suggest going no lower than 4.56 on a Dana 30.

Ford 8.8 (all variants) can go down to 5.71

Dana 44 can go down to 5.89 (standard cut/low pinion) or 5.38 (reverse cut/high pinion, front axle only)

Chrysler 8.25 can go down to 4.56

There is no reason the 8.25 shouldn't be able to go lower other than nobody makes lower gear sets for it.

Don't go lower than 4.56 with the dana 30 for the reasons mvusse states above.  4.56:1 is just fine for 33's or 35's.

Your F150 width axle is significantly wider, about 5", than a stock dana 30.  Unless you're going to a similar or same width axle upfront, you'll probably be better off tracking down an explorer width axle.

The carrier break for a D30 is 3.55 and down, 3.73 and up.

For a D44 it is 3.73 and down, 3.92 and up.

So if you currently have 3.55 gears, you will need a different carrier for your Dana 30. For the Dana 44 it all depends on what gears the axle has when you get it.

Lincoln Versilles [sp?] 9" rears were 58-60" wide (I forget now) 5on4.5" wheel pattern, and the hot ticket back in the day,

tough to find now though.

Mustangs from 68 or so, till the Mustang II came out are also a good MJ width if you can find one.

Granadas also got some 9's but I'd guess the junkyard supply of them is long  gone as well.
