89JeepMJ
I have a D30 and D35 under her right now, with 3.55s. I'm going 33" tires up from my 31". i got a F150 8.8 sitting on the bench in the shop. i know their a little to wide for the MJ. I'm thinking regearing the front D30 and swap the out the D35. how low can i go with the D30, will i need a carrier. if i get a 8.8 out of an explorer how low can i go? same with D44 or 8.25. this is something i really don't have any know how in. i need options and ideas thanks guys
Mattwheels
I think the D30 max gears are 4.
Stacks
Here is a link that will answer your questions on gears and where the carrier break is. Hope this helps. http://www.differentials.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/2012-WCD-Catalog.pdf
89JeepMJ
so a 8.8 doesnt need a carrier because there is no breaks but i D30 and D44 need a new carrier to go 4.10/4.56 because it has 3.55s and its on the other side, right?
zackcj7
so a 8.8 doesnt need a carrier because there is no breaks but i D30 and D44 need a new carrier to go 4.10/4.56 because it has 3.55s and its on the other side, right? Yes, that is correct. I do have an 8.8 already setup with 4:56 gears for sale BTW. Little far of a drive for you though. :brows:
mvusse
Spicer only made gears down to 4.56 for the Dana 30. There are aftermarket 4.88 gears available, but the pinion gear is so freakishly small there isn't w whole lot of engagement between the gears making it very weak. I suggest going no lower than 4.56 on a Dana 30. Ford 8.8 (all variants) can go down to 5.71 Dana 44 can go down to 5.89 (standard cut/low pinion) or 5.38 (reverse cut/high pinion, front axle only) Chrysler 8.25 can go down to 4.56 There is no reason the 8.25 shouldn't be able to go lower other than nobody makes lower gear sets for it. Timeless
Don't go lower than 4.56 with the dana 30 for the reasons mvusse states above. 4.56:1 is just fine for 33's or 35's. Your F150 width axle is significantly wider, about 5", than a stock dana 30. Unless you're going to a similar or same width axle upfront, you'll probably be better off tracking down an explorer width axle.
89JeepMJ
Spicer only made gears down to 4.56 for the Dana 30. I know zackcj7 already answer it but just to double check. for the D44 and D30. i need a carrier though to go that low right?
mvusse
The carrier break for a D30 is 3.55 and down, 3.73 and up. For a D44 it is 3.73 and down, 3.92 and up. So if you currently have 3.55 gears, you will need a different carrier for your Dana 30. For the Dana 44 it all depends on what gears the axle has when you get it. HOrnbrod
You also have the option on the D44 if it's 3.55 or below to use 4.10 and up "thick" gears and retain the lower numerical carrier.
Pete M
or you can ignore all of that and just find a dana 30 and an explorer 8.8 or XJ 8.25 with 4.10 gears already in them and run it that way.

Pete M
9" from a truck is wider than our stock axles.
jpnjim
Lincoln Versilles [sp?] 9" rears were 58-60" wide (I forget now) 5on4.5" wheel pattern, and the hot ticket back in the day, tough to find now though. Mustangs from 68 or so, till the Mustang II came out are also a good MJ width if you can find one. Granadas also got some 9's but I'd guess the junkyard supply of them is long gone as well. jpnjim
For truck 9's only the 66-77 Broncos are close in width, something like 57-58" wide, but are the bigger 5 on 5.5" wheel pattern
