Hey, everyone.

 

I've seen a lot of stuff on clutch fans for the 4.0, but I need to replace the clutch on my older 2.5, and haven't found much. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thought about it, but I have enough electrical issues already. 

 

Since I'm already asking dumb questions, Rock Auto mentions standard rotation and reverse rotation clutches. I would assume mine is standard rotation, but knowing my luck...

 

I do have the dealer added air setup. That wouldn't change the way the fan gear turns though...I don't think. Thoughts?

What year is your Jeep? If you have a '86 with V belts then your water pump, and fan, is clockwise. If you have a '87 and later with a serpentine belt, then the rotation is counter clock wise.

Reread the post. You have an '86.

To add to that, ccw rotation of the water pump and fan clutch (looking from the front) = reverse rotation; cw rotation = standard rotation.

A few years back I bought a 94 XJ with a blown 2.5, I picked up a early 2.5 for $100 and dropped it in. I swapped all the pulleys over from the 94 onto the 86 motor. I chased an overheating issue for weeks after that. I finally pulled the water pump off the 94 motor and swapped it on the 86 motor. In the process I happened to notice the impeller was different. Yep, I was spinning the 86 pump backwards.

 

I did the same thing years ago on my Shelby too. The parts house sold me the wrong pump. I now check every pump before I bolt them on.

Thanks, guys, That's exactly what I needed to know. My local mechanic is still baffled by this Jeep's setup. I have the V belt, but it runs through a tensioner on the top of the engine like a serpentine, and the tensioner is after the A/C compressor and not before. I think it's a dealer added air package (high mount compressor on the passenger side powered off a secondary belt. It didn't match any of the diagrams I've seen online for other 2.5s.

I don't much about the '86 4-bangers with A/C, but that looks stock to me.  I will cross reference my manuals and books to see if they have some diagrams on how everything is supposed to be arranged.

Okay. I could be wrong. I have yet to see a diagram that has the 2.5 with two belts on it. It wasn't in any of my manuals either, but they're all aftermarket. I need to get an FSM. I'm sure the tensioner arrangement is stock, it's just odd for me to see a v-belt running pulleys on both sides. Maybe that's not that unusual.

On my two wheel drive 86 MJ it had the exact set up as I see in your picture. I also had wonder if it was a stock option, though I did have switches in the cab it seemed funny having a serpentine belt like set up with 2 separate V-belts. I want to also know about electric fan set ups for the 2.5l if anyone has some good info.

For an electric fan i just bought a 16" fan online and a adjustable control er with a radiator probe. its all installed have yet to test it yet working on to many other things. and  my belt routing isnt like anything previously mentioned. the truck had factory air and the alt was moved to the ac spot. its a serpentine to.
